Originally, the boss of the Montreal mafia was also a caporegime in the Bonanno family. This was during Vic Cotroni's reign. But in later years this became a symbolic status as neither Vito or Nick Rizzuto were officially caporegimes, yet they were in fact the bosses of the Montreal mafia. Sciascia was officially the caporegime, but in actuality served as the laison between the Bonannos and the Rizzutos and acted as the Montreal representative in the Bonanno family.
