Bosses of several Italian Mafia rings have been arrested for trying to monopolize freight transport market in Italy’s south.

Italian police today arrested six Sicilian and Neapolitan Mafia bosses, including Nicola Schiavone, the son of the infamous Neapolitan godfather Sandocan, and Gaetano Riina, the younger brother of former Cosa Nostra kingpin Toto Riina.

Italian mobsters were arrested at the request of the Naples Prosecutor's Officefor trying to take over fruit and vegetables transport from the southern Sicily and Campania to Laccio. The Mob had long been trying to control several Sicilian farms, prompting protests from outraged farmers and forcing Ivan Lo Bello, the President of the Sicilian Industrialists Confederation, to make anofficial statement.

Italian Mafia has always kept a keen eye on the southern fruit and vegetable market, controlling a large portion of the country’s trucking industry. The trucks also moved around most of fire arms that southern mob bosses received from Eastern Europe.

Hence, alleged charges on the arrest warrants included arms smuggling, as well as raider attacks and obstruction of free competition.

Meanwhile, anti-mafia group SOS Impresa released a report stating that economic crisis had virtually made Italian Mafia the “country's biggest bank”, which controlled over 200 Italian companies.
