Here's a random thought: the East Coasters refer to England as "across the pond," which is a cute expression I wish I could use. But across the pond for me is Catalina Island, and then if you go up a bit, Hawaii? And eventually Japan... so we can't use that nifty little phrase. Unless we say "Across the East pond," which begs the question, how many ponds are we talking here? It's sad, I think. I guess I'll just have to talk about Japan more often; doesn't look like I have a choice.
