Teacher Tells 2nd Graders There Is No Santa Claus

This has hit the local news. This teacher told her 7 year old students that Santa doesn't exist. What fascinated me are the comments at the end. Some are angry at what the teacher did, but others think that parents are wrong for perpetuating the story of Santa, that it's a lie that has led to the commercialization of Christmas.

Personally, I think that children deserve a period of innocence, when they are perfectly capable of believing that some fat, jolly man magically flies through the air in his sled, powered by flying reindeer, and visits millions of children and leaves them the gifts on their list. In exchange, all he asks is for some milk and cookies, and maybe some carrots for the reindeer.

BERKELEY — A Toms River man is facing drunken driving and other charges after he stopped at the entrance to Island Beach State Park waiting for the red lights to turn green, police said.

John Polacek II, 49, of Morris Boulevard in Toms River, is facing charges of driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report a motor vehicle accident and careless driving after he found sitting at the entrance to the state park inside a 2010 Toyota Corolla after police in Seaside Park received a 911 call at 6:21 p.m. Monday reporting an erratic driver headed south on Central Avenue, according to Seaside Park Patrolman Steve Shadiack.

“We got a got from an observer near K Street saying ‘the operator might be intoxicated,’ ” Shadiack explained.

At C Street in the borough a concrete street sign was struck and debris, later identified as belonging to the Toyota Polacek was found driving, was scattered around the area, Shadiack explained.

Seaside Park police informed Berkeley police the suspect’s vehicle was headed in their direction south on Central Avenue, Shadiack added.

Polacek was discovered sitting in the vehicle by the gatehouse guard at the entrance, Shadiack explained.

“The gatehouse guard walked up to him and asked ‘Can I help you?’ and Mr. Polacek told him, ‘I’m just waiting for the light to turn green,’” Shadiack said.

The red light traffic signals at the entrance to Island Beach State Park are turned on whenever the park is closed.

A photograph of Polacek was not available, police said.

-Plano police want to talk to the man who installed a hidden camera in a changing room at a Plano recreation center.

Police said the recording device was disguised to look like an air freshener. It was found attached to the wall next to a shower in a family changing area in the Oak Point Recreation Center.

"We believe it was put in there for the recording of individuals as they are changing clothes, dressing and going in to take a shower," Officer David Tilley said. The center's supervisor said the camera was halfway down the wall, pointing downward.

Troy's new mayor, Janice Daniels -- a longtime activist in Michigan's tea party movement -- went on the defensive Friday, less than three weeks after being sworn into office, when Internet users found what many called a gay slur on her Facebook page.

In a post dated June 25, Daniels shared with her Facebook followers the line: "I think I am going to throw away my I Love New York carrying bag now that ******s can get married there." Daniels' post came a day after New York legislators voted to allow gay marriage in the state.

Basically if I was in the teacher's position I probably would tell the kids to ask their parents and leave it at that...

Which is exactly what she should have done - shut her damn mouth and let each child believe what they wanted.

Former Miss USA Rima Fakih was arrested in Highland Park for suspicion of drunken driving early Saturday morning, her attorney said.

“Unfortunately she was,” Doraid Elder said late Saturday.

He said he had been retained that night and had few details about the arrest but said Fakih’s record “has not a single blemish” and she was “very saddened and very apologetic for the situation that she is in right now.”

Highland Park police would not confirm the arrest, saying inquiries would be answered Monday by the chief or deputy chief.

Elder repeatedly referred to the charge as “allegations,” but also said “this shouldn’t be something that defines who she is,” adding it was “poor judgment” on her part.
