As far as the everyday life, George Anastasia had a good description in "The Last Gangster". In it, he talks about how many days are spent sitting 'round, talking shit and thinking up scams. Working the books. Always on to something, always a few balls up in the air. And although nine out of ten schemes die on the vine, the one that works out is worth the effort to them.

I imagine its very much the same for the average mob soldier across the States.
