Most gangsters would shoot your grandmother in the face if she slighted them in any way? You know, that I highly doubt lol.

Tip That Led to ‘Whitey’ Bulger Arrest Came From Iceland

By The WBUR Newsroom
Jun 24, 2011, 3:24 PM

BOSTON — WBUR has confirmed that the tip that led the FBI to James “Whitey” Bulger’s apartment Wednesday in Santa Monica came from a woman living in Iceland according to law enforcement sources.

She reported seeing the FBI’s public service announcement looking for Catherine Greig on a CNN report on the investigation of Bulger and Greig.

Interesting that the tip came from overseas, especially Iceland. Makes you wonder if that is where some of his money was stashed.

The other thing to remember is that Whitey was not LCN! He was a member of an OC gang that had it's own rules, albeit similar to LCN. He had a good reason to give up the Patriarca's - they were his competition. From what I have read, he did not give up much, most of which the Feds already knew. He confirmed info against LCN to his own Irish gang benefit.

I bet it rubs the hide of many LCN that he got over on them.

The story may have been a little misleading, but to be clear, the tip came from an Icelandic woman living in Santa Monica. The only thing that's stashed in Iceland is my vast porn collection.

It was a bit of an exaggeration to kind of drive the point home that guys like Bulger are ruthless bastards who shouldn't be looked up to by anybody. My grandmother is a sweet lady, so I doubt he'd shoot her in the face lol.

New England Mafia is weakened but still pursued
By LAURA CRIMALDI, Associated Press
June 27, 2011

BOSTON (AP) — When James "Whitey" Bulger ruled the streets of South Boston, the New England crime scene was a battleground for a bloody turf war between the Italian Mafia and Irish street crews.

But some observers say the organized crime landscape that took shape during Bulger's 16 years on the lam — ending with his capture days ago in California — is a shell of its former self, hobbling along with "old men in diapers" at the helm.

"It's over," said Boston defense attorney Joseph J. Balliro Sr., who represented crime figures Vincent "Jimmy the Bear" Flemmi, an FBI informant believed to have killed at least eight people, and Henry Tameleo, the reputed consigliere of the New England Mafia.

Flemmi and Tameleo both died in prison decades ago.

A string of prosecutions, gang warfare and the march of time have sent many made men to prison or the grave. The ruthless crime syndicates powerfully depicted in movies including "The Godfather" and "The Departed" have seemingly lost much of their box office luster in real life. And even the chase of mobsters has been splintered by the terrorism focus put on law enforcement by the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

"They got their hands full with terrorism," said former Bulger associate John "Red" Shea. "These mob families have been taken apart."

Bulger, 81, was captured Wednesday in Santa Monica, California, where he apparently had been living for most of the time he was a fugitive. Bulger, who appeared Friday afternoon inside a heavily guarded federal courthouse in Boston to answer for his role in 19 murders, told a judge he could pay for a lawyer if prosecutors would give him back money seized from him.

Carmen "The Cheeseman" DiNunzio, the reputed former underboss of the New England mob, pleaded guilty to federal bribery charges and is serving a six-year federal prison sentence. Another former boss, 83-year-old Luigi "Baby Shacks" Manocchio, is locked up awaiting trial on charges he extorted thousands of dollars from strip clubs in Providence, Rhode Island. Manocchio, who has denied the charges against him, was among 120 suspected mobsters and associates arrested in January.

Gennaro "Jerry" Angiulo, who ran the rackets for the Patriarca crime family in Boston from the 1960s to the early 1980s, died in 2009 at age 90. The site of Marshall Motors in Somerville, which served as the headquarters for the Winter Hill Gang once led by Bulger, is now a church.

"They keep chasing old men in diapers," said Rhode Island defense attorney and former Drug Enforcement Administration agent Raymond Mansolillo, who briefly represented Manocchio. "I think it's a waste of taxpayer resources."

The Italian crime operation La Cosa Nostra, however, remains the top organized crime threat in the northeastern New England states, said FBI supervisory senior resident agent Jeffrey S. Sallet. The Rhode Island-based Sallet heads up organized crime investigations for the FBI's Boston division.

"Because somebody is not a young man doesn't mean they are not dangerous and cannot order acts of violence," said Sallet, who arrested Bonnano family crime boss Joseph Massino in New York in 2003. Massino, who later was convicted of orchestrating a quarter-century's worth of murder, racketeering and other crimes, this year became the highest-ranking New York Mafia member ever to testify for the government.

Sallet said law enforcement put a dent in the mob at the same time that sea changes in traditional Italian neighborhoods such as the North End and East Boston shrank the "talent pool." There are ethnic organized-crime groups with roots in Asia and Eurasia that have set up in Boston, Springfield and Lowell, but they haven't had the chance to get entrenched, Sallet said.

"We gave (La Cosa Nostra) a substantial head start before we started putting them in jail," said Sallet, noting that racketeering laws were passed in the 1970s. "They've been in operation since the 1930s."

Rhode Island state police Col. Steven G. O'Donnell said the poor economy and the tightening of legitimate credit markets are other reasons to keep the heat on organized crime.

"Especially in a bad economy, they have dirty money working for them. They put it on the street at shylocking rates," said O'Donnell, who infiltrated Irish organized-crime crews in Massachusetts and Rhode Island as an undercover officer in the 1990s.

"I don't think law enforcement would close the books until it's eradicated," O'Donnell said. "It will never be eradicated."

Some critics of law enforcement's mob obsession say the public would be better served if attention were paid to lucrative drug operations in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Colombia, street violence and emerging ethnic crime groups.

"I think that's a lot of bluster on behalf of law enforcement to justify their budgets. The old days of so-called organized crime have been dead for some time," said Boston defense attorney Anthony Cardinale, who represented DiNunzio and Francis "Cadillac Frank" Salemme, a former Patriarca family boss believed to be in the federal witness protection program. "Instead of going after an old man for getting a couple hundred dollars a week from a strip club, they should be going after true criminal behaviors like drug cartels."

Shea, 45, says the mob faltered in part because its members gradually gave up on their golden rule: a code of silence.

"There was a code that, people today, they don't do that," said Shea, who now earns a living as an author. "It's a total lost cause today."

In some ways, today's New England mob members aren't that different from the Hollywood producers who relish Mafia tales.

"They want to tell their story," said Providence police Capt. Thomas Verdi, who led the department's organized crime unit for six years. "The reverence that they once had is virtually non-existent. They have nothing but their stories."

'Whitey' Bulger had ties to RI mob family
Jim Taricani
June 23, 2011

(NEWS VIDEO AT LINK BELOW)

James "Whitey" Bulger had ties to the Patriarca crime family and the late Raymond Patriarca, who ruled the New England mob with an iron fist.

Bulger certainly knew of the power of Patriarca, and over the years paid him tons of money in order to operate the rackets in Boston.

When the FBI busted the Anguilo brothers, who were running the Boston branch of La Cosa Nostra for Patriarca, Bulger found an opening.

He moved in with his Winter Hill gang, but had to pay tribute, hundreds of thousands of dollars, to Patriarca in order to stay in business.

"Organized crime is all about money. Money and power," said Col. Steven O'Donnell, head of the Rhode Island State Police.

Bulger was a long-time FBI informant and one FBI agent, who grew up with him, John Connolly, got too close to him. Connolly tipped off Bulger and his right-hand man, Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi on various grand jury investigations.

Connolly was finally convicted of a variety of crimes, all relating to his criminal involvement with Bulger. He's still in prison.

But Bulger, played by Jack Nicholson in the Academy-Award winning film, "The Departed," was a ruthless killer and cold-blooded criminal.

And Rhode Island State Police have surveillance photos of Bulger meeting with wiseguys in Providence.

"There's been surveillance of him with ranking members of the Patriarca family over the years," O'Donnell said.

In his younger years, Bulger was arrested for a string of bank robberies in Rhode Island and Indiana.

If I'm not mistaken this p.o.s. was in Alcatraz. He was close to Clarance Carnes and I believe he had a relationship with Frank Morris. I hope they shoot him.

I saw a couple funny stories out in California where they want the feds to question Whitey as the possible Geezer bandit. Some old guy out in Cali who has been robbing banks off and on for some years. lol. The guy has a hat and glasses on but it doesn't look like him. At least I don't think so.

Supposedly Whitey was going back and forth to Boston among other places strapped. So he probably had help and had money stashed. I knew he couldn't still have $800K of the original money he went on the lam with. See story below:

http://www.boston.com/Boston/metrodesk/2011/06/webbulgerlawyer/CY6bKrTCh5jTMyeWGBpKYO/index.html

James “Whitey” Bulger, the alleged Boston crime boss who went on the run for 16 years, told federal agents that he had traveled back to Boston in disguise, “armed to the teeth,” federal prosecutors said today.

Bulger, who is accused of 19 murders and a slew of other crimes, told agents that he returned to Boston because he “had to take care of some unfinished business,” FBI Supervisory Special Agent Richard Teahan said, according to a court filing by the US attorney’s office.

“Bulger refused to elaborate on whom he visited, when he exactly visited, and who was with him on these trips to Boston,” prosecutors said.

Bulger, who was arrested Wednesday at his apartment in Santa Monica, Calif., made the comments while in custody and en route to Boston, the prosecutors said. He had waived his Miranda rights.

Bulger, who was flown to Boston on Friday for an initial appearance in federal court, “admitted that he had been a frequent traveler as a fugitive,” prosecutors said.

He also allegedly acknowledged “visiting Las Vegas on numerous occasions to play the slots,” the prosecutors said, noting that Bulger claimed he had won more than he lost.

He also “admitted traveling to San Diego and then crossing over into Tijuana to purchase medicines,” prosecutors said.

Prosecutors made the claims in a document filed in US District Court as part of their argument that Bulger should not receive a court-appointed lawyer.

“The foregoing facts are of course significant because they indicate Bulger may have additional assets and/or allies willing to assist him in his current predicament,” the prosecutors said.

“Defendant James Bulger has the burden of proving he cannot afford to retain counsel,” the prosecutors said.

Prosecutors sought sworn affidavits from Bulger’s brothers, former state Senate president William M. Bulger, and John Bulger, a retired probation officer, suggesting they might be able to help James Bulger pay for a lawyer.

Bulger’s current attorney, Peter Krupp, countered in his own court filing that Bulger should get a court-appointed attorney. He said an affidavit submitted by Bulger that is under seal “demonstrates Mr. Bulger’s inability to hire counsel.”

Krupp said it was clear that if Bulger had any money, the government would seek to seize it.

He also said, “Mr. Bulger has not and will not request any members of his extended family to pay anything for his defense, nor can he control any family member’s assets to pay anything for his defense.”

“His family has not come forward to hire counsel, and there is no evidence to support the government’s surmise that extended family members might be willing and able to hire counsel or make some contribution toward the cost of hiring counsel,” Krupp wrote.

A hearing to determine whether Bulger will get a court-appointed attorney has been set for Tuesday at 2 p.m. before Chief US District Court Court Judge Mark L. Wolf.

Authorities have said that a search of Bulger’s Santa Monica apartment after he was arrested last week uncovered a stash of more than $800,000 in cash. Bulger said Friday in a federal court appearance in Boston that he could hire his own attorney if he got that money back.

However, some of Bulger’s alleged victims are seeking the cash themselves. On Friday, US District Court Judge William G. Young placed a lien on the $800,000 at the request of Julie Dammers Rakes, who won a $31 million civil judgment against Bulger five years ago.

Boston attorney Anthony Cardinale said the money should go to a Bulger victim before it goes to the government. Bulger used threats of violence to take over the South Boston liquor store owned by Dammers Rakes and her ex-husband in the early 1980’s.

“No one can touch that money, or do anything with that money, until they go before Judge Young and get it cleared,” Cardinale said. “I’ll make sure I do everything I can to make sure victims get that money. Certainly, not Bulger, and not the government.”

They dropped the Racketeering charges. They decided to just stick to the 19 murders. Like anything else mattered at this point...

He will end up dropping dead the day before his trial starts

If you had to choose between a meeting with a red hot Irish woman from Boston or Uncle Joe, you would choose what?

There's nothing like the taste of a hot redhead....like cotton candy!

Wouldn't a "boss" wearing shorts more easily hide in plain sight? wink

Not always, Vic Amuso was wearing shorts when he was arrested at a mall in Scranton.

My advice for any future fugitive out there would be to cross dress. And yes..don't bring any of your old girlfriends with you. If Whitey had been alone and cross dressed the entire time, NOBODY would've found him. Ever. Sure it may be embarrassing to cross dress, especially if by some off chance you get caught, but I don't think the FBI would ever be able to close in on you if you did that. Especially if you're a gangster. If Vic Amuso had been wearing a Marilyn Monroe wig, high heels, a leather jacket and a mini skirt, they would've never caught up with him.

Why would you wish for something like that? This guy is as bad as they come. Your life or anyone else's means nothing to him. I'm glad they got him.

I agree, Whitey is the type of man who would shoot your grandmother in the face if she slighted him in any way. Most of these gangsters are like that, but Whitey was especially ruthless, in my opinion.

I spend a lot of time in Santa Monica, and was in Santa Monica on the day Bulger was arrested. It gives me the chills knowing that I could have crossed paths with him multiple times over the past few years, and not even known it.

Really? This old gangster would kill my grandma? She'd have to double cross him first
