from wiki..
According to court papers filed in Brooklyn Federal Court, John Gambino is one of a three-man panel that runs the Gambino family, jointly with Daniel Marino and Bartolomeo "Bobby" Vernace after Operation Old Bridge in February 2008 decapitated the leadership. They oversee a slimmed-down criminal gang of 200 made men and 300 associates active in drug trafficking, extortion and loansharking, according to the FBI.[22] His nephew Frank Cali is a rising star in the Gambino family.[23] However, due to the arrests of Marino and Vernace, Gambino is the only man from the three man panel not imprisoned. This means he is now the sole acting boss of the family.

For once Wikipedia has most of that right. There was a 3 man ruling panel in place before Marino and Vernace were indicted last year and this year. But it's an assumption on the part of whoever wrote that Wiki article that, just because Gambino hasn't been indicted, that automatically means he has become the acting boss of the family.

You missed the (citation needed) tag.

That used to be on the main Gambino family article as well, but I removed it a while ago.

Being in jail, not really, no. But he is the titular boss, lightning rod, whatever.

In my opinion the Boss of the Gambino's is and is scheduled to be released in November 2011, Arnold Squittieri.

Peter Gotti is still the official boss. He's got the title just like Vic Amuso and Carmine Persico still do. They all still have varying degrees of influence but obviously they obviously aren't in any position to directly run things anymore.

As far as anyone knows, Arnold Squitieri is still the official underboss and Joseph Corozzo is still the official consigliere. But how much they will step back in, and when, remains to be seen. It's always possible we could see a new acting boss or a new ruling panel put in place.

lol If you think Peter Gotti has any say in that family. If we are to believe the informants then Squitieri and Marino are everything over there. Other influential members are Frank Cali, Bobby Vernace and Louis Filippelli. John Gambino may be the acting boss, but I haven't heard it from any reliable source.

However, I will say this. If there is a Gotti who has any say, it is Gene Gotti.

Say what you want about Peter but, when he was on the outside, he got his tribute like any other boss. But, as I said, obviously he's not in a position to run things anymore, as he is really only being the titular boss now. He will likely die in prison.

With the guy being in jail till 2017 or something?
I had thought he'd been busted down to a soldier, implying he had no say in naming an acting or whatever; though I may be wrong about this undertanding that being imprisoned makes the day to day running of a crew almost immpossible & imprisoned captains often step down.

I am pretty sure he was named a captain by prosecutors in his heroin trial, for which he recieved 50 years or something equally ridiculous but totally deserved.

He was either a captain or acting captain when he went away, if I remember right. But he's a soldier now. He's still respected and has been said to have a lot of shy money on the street.
