Jaws: The Inside Story

In the summer of 1975, terror gripped the nation as a 25-foot great white shark captured the world and Jaws made sure nobody ever felt safe going into the water again. Jaws was a huge success, breaking all existing box office records and grossing $470 million dollars worldwide. The film made director Steven Spielberg a superstar, won three Oscars and inspired numerous imitations and countless shark phobias. The music from Jaws is still recognized worldwide as the theme song for sharks. In this two-hour special, we'll celebrate this classic, looking back at the movie's origins; the adaptation of an enormous bestseller to the first real "summer blockbuster," and how Spielberg broke new ground in location filming, despite months of setbacks.


An excellent show!

I remember Jaws very well. What a sensation that was hu? I remember going to Universal Studios Hollywood on the tour and saw Jaws in person. What amazed me is how tiny the body of water actually was. You'll see the familiar "Amity" sign in the beginning.

Anyway, sure looks different than the movie, but a lot of fun.

I remember when I seen that movie the first time as a kid when that head came out of the boat everyone in the theater was screaming. The nightmares I had after watching that movie.

I love Universal. Haven't been there in years and am due for another visit.

Back in the 80's I was there with my kids and some friends and my daughter got chosen to ride the E.T. bike, positioned in front of a large tv screen, that showed her riding in the sky, just like Elliot. Very Cool!!

Back to Jaws though, EVERYONE was talking about the film. I actually liked the 2nd Jaws as well. Was that the one where the young boy in the water gets rammed into the boat?

The second one was OK, but the first was a classic. I read somewhere that Quint was actually supposed to be played by Sterling Hayden, but that he had to leave the country because of trouble with the IRS. What would he have done differently with the role? Gotten Sollozzo after the shark??

Mr. Babe loves the movie though, so I'll have to be sure to DVR this for him.

If Universal had waited on Spielberg to finish up CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND and had let him make his JAWS sequel instead of rushing out a watchable (but definately inferior) follow-up, the Beard would have made a prequel about the U.S.S. Indiapolis with young Quint.

JAWS 3 and especially JAWS: THE REVENGE, they sucked.



I didn't know sharks roar.

Ha ha ha!! It did sound like a roar didn't it? Well, look at it this way, it's better than a shark that meows.

I get the sequels mixed up, but it is true, NOTHING beats the original.

Loved the movie. I remember the summer the book came out; seeing people on the beach reading the book and thinking, hey its just a book. I read the book and then was petrified of the water. To overcome my fear, my brother and I swam out to the end of the barrels, which were the enclosed swimming area. I felt that I conquered my fear. We were about 100 yds from the beach and I was facing the beach. My brother is facing me, looking out toward the open water. Suddenly he gets this look of terror on his face, turns, and starts swimming (flailing) towards the beach. My immediate thought is JAWS! I passed him in about 10 yds and never stopped until I reached the beach (bastard).

This was a very well done special. I forgot how young Spielberg was when he made it!

Jaws is a timeless classic. Just bought the DVD a few days ago. There will never be another Robert Shaw.

I love Jaws. Always loved it, ever since my dad bought it for me I wish I'd had the biography channel Roy Shieder is the best!! Sheriff Brody!

I've been here too when I was 6/7 years old. We have family in Los Angeles so we went to Disney Land and Universal Studios.

And I have the video footage of this holiday on DVD. I was almost crying when Jaws came out of the water.

We also went with a camper from Los Angeles all the way to New York. Great memories.

Wow, that was scary.

They really don't make movies like that anymore. But I will say this though, one of the worst movies I ever saw was Jaws: The Revenge. WHOA. It amazes me that Michael Caine decided to be part of it, but I do remember reading an interview with him where he said he had never seen the film. Apparently his people warned him against it. As many of us know, Michael Caine is one of the greatest actors that ever lived. I'd imagine his time is valuable .
