I heard this morning on the news that Peter Fonda called in a 911 call to report a dead body in a parked car in Pacific Palisades. eek Apparently the body was there for about a week. Here's the audio.

This is pretty scary. Someone is writing graffiti in Santa Ana, CA saying that "we gonna kill Governor Jerry Brown on Feb. 14, 2011. uhwhat I'm guessing we'll never find out who wrote it, but with today's political climate, you can bet the authorities are taking it seriously.

Quote:
VALPARAISO | Three Valparaiso High School students suspended earlier this week now may face criminal charges after being caught on camera snorting a prescription painkiller off a school desk.

According to Valparaiso police, an anonymous student used a cell phone camera to film three 17-year-old boys snorting crushed hydrocodone tablets, commonly marketed as Vicodin, in a classroom Monday.

In the video, three students are seen in a classroom raking a powdery substance into a line and snorting it up their noses. The boys then jerk their heads back and wipe their faces before laughing.

The student who captured the incident gave one of the school's assistant principals a copy of the video Tuesday. The school resource officer was notified and watched the video before questioning the students involved.

All three of the boys admitted to knowingly ingesting the hydrocodone. Two of them said they snorted it while the third told the officer he ingested it through his mouth.

One of the boys told the officer he received one and 1/2 tablets of the drug from an 18-year-old student, crushed the pills and cut them with sugar and flour he kept in his locker.

Police also interviewed the 18-year-old, who denied any involvement. Valparaiso police spokesman Sgt. Mike Grennes said investigators still are looking into his possible involvement and consider him a person of interest.

All three boys were suspended from school and immediately sent home with relatives. The three also were ordered to take drug tests.

Grennes said the boys may face juvenile charges, two of them for possession of a controlled substance, while the student who admitted to mixing the drugs could face a drug dealing charge.

Haha, sugar and flour?

Yeah let's charge him for drug dealing since that's obviously what he was doing. He wasn't just being a dumb teenager who made a mistake. Let's ruin his life.

Reading some of the comments the teacher of the class was placed on Administrative Leave. Now that is some bullshit.

I want to add one more comment. My husband was never interviewed as to the events of that day. He was brought to the office, read a letter, and escorted to his car. How's that for an investigation, and 'innocent until proven guilty?'

[quote]embcrna05 said: "Slappy---I will tell you where that teacher was. He is my husband and he was teaching 5 kids in the front of the classroom. This is an emotionally challenged special ed class. The students doing drugs entered the class late. There is not another adult in the room to assist with the class at all. My husband had a choice: continue teaching the lesson he started, or be a babysitter to students who refuse to engage in the classroom lessons. He had NO idea that those students were doing that. He was BUSY doing his job---teaching.

Students every single day refuse to participate in the classroom lessons. Class had already started. My husband was focused on the students in the front of the room. He has ONE set of eyes. He is ONE person. His eyes cannot possibly scan the entire room every single second of the class period.

Before you judge, perhaps you should walk in a teacher's shoes. My husband went back to school, took a 40% pay cut from his first career (business), because he wanted to teach kids and make a difference. He is there at 6 am every single day and spends a minimum of 8 hrs on the weekends at school preparing lessons. Now he is on administrative leave and may lose his job because he was focused on actually teaching, and in a 2 minute period, some students in the back snorted drugs.

Don't judge so quickly next time.

Officials with the state’s [Texas] power grid declared an electrical emergency and imposed a rolling blackout across the state in order to manage power demands.

In a voice recorded message to the media, Dottie Roark, spokeswoman for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, said that the state had lost approximately 7,000 megawatts of generating capacity overnight.

The little kid who played Darth Vader in the Volkswagen commercial (that aired during the Super Bowl) is visiting New York City and got to meet James Earl Jones (the voice of Darth Vader in the movies). It was quite a tender scene ... the little kid is really cute and Jones was touched by him.

News from the old neighborhood...... (it knocked the Egypt story off the top spot in tv news in NYC):

Yesterday, a 23 year old man had himself quite a day. At approximately 5:00 a.m. he went to his stepfather's house and stabbed him to death (a few blocks away from my old apartment). Some 12 hours passed and he found his way to his girlfriend's home where he killed her and her mother, as well. He ran out into the street and carjacked a car, and as he was escaping he hit a 60 year old pedestrian, who died this morning (a few blocks away from Signor Vitelli). He abandoned the car a short distance away, and then a few hours later he carjacked another car (using a machete) and has been the subject of a huge police search since..... He was last seen about seven hours ago a few miles away from where he ran over the pedestrian.

The tv reports are saying he is armed, and considered to be dangerous. Duhhhhhhh....

Dunno. They JUST reported that a suspect resembling this guy was taken into custody in midtown Manhattan (34th Street and 7th Avenue). They don't know, for sure, if it's the same guy.

What a chain of events. All the poor victims but especially the poor pedestrian that was run down. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. frown

UPDATE: The guy was caught on the subway at the Times Square station about 9:00 a.m. today. He had been banging on the door of the conductor's cab, yelling something about how his girlfriend ruined his life. The conductor kept the door (to the cab) locked while he radioed for help, and the attacker then stabbed another passenger in the neck.

The first attack, against the stepfather, was right around the corner from where I used to live.

Glad they got this guy. I saw the story on the news last night, but the pedestrian hadn't died yet. So sad.

I also saw that they caught the guy who had stolen the BMW, beaten and stabbed the car's owner and put him in the trunk.

Ironically closer than you think. The same subway line on which he was caught was the setting for "The Taking of Pelham 123".

I'm glad they caught this sonofabitch - and to tell you the truth, I'm surprised the cops didn't kill him.

This happened, as SC said, literally in my neighborhood. All the streets around where I live were swarming with police early yesterday evening. Streets were blocked off, and police cars were everywhere. Our local Eyewitness News reporter was stationed right around the corner from my apartment (by Adelman's Deli). And a police helicopter was circling directly overhead for around an hour and a half. I overheard the police officers talking among themselves, saying they doubted this creep would be taken alive. Well, that turned out to be a little premature, but at least they got him. Four people dead. Just horrible.

IMO, this should be a death-penalty case. mad It would be damn-near impossible to change my opinion on this one.

Get this. There's a longtime Dallas County Commissioner who is black named John Wiley price. He's a real cafone. This past Tuesday while the Commissioner's Court was in session during the public comment agenda a guy called Price a Mullah, referring to a Muslim minister. Price thought (no, I don't think he did) he said Mulie.

Now, for those of you who aren't Italian, the Italian word for eggplant is melanzana (pronounced moo-len-yawn). It's also a word used by Italians to refer to black people. A short verison of melanzana is mulie. So, Price must have been familiar with mulie because he erupted and said "All of you white people, go to hell."

What's also interesting is that growing up in Pittsburgh, I never heard the shortened version - mulie. How about you New Yorkers? Did you use mulie? I always said melanzna.

I'm from the East Bronx, Oli. Born and raised on Arthur Avenue, and I currently live in the Throggs Neck/Country Club section of the Bronx.

Yeah, unfortunately I heard the "moolie" a lot growing up. It was often used by Italian Americans in my neighborhood instead of the N word. Not that it's any less hateful, because it's not. I've never come across a single person who interpreted the word to be okay because it's actual meaning is eggplant. Think about it. You'd be telling a guy that the color of his skin resembles an eggplant. Eggplants are actually a deep shade of purple, and I've yet to meet a purple person. To justify it that way is silly. Even worse was the word tizzune, which is the actual Italian equivalant of the N word. That word is probably even more hateful.

I'm not blind to the fact that there was lots of racial tension (and outright) hate between blacks and Italians back then, but I'm not proud of it either.

I never heard tizzune either. I wish my father was still alive so I could ask him. I'll ask my sister.

One thing that's interesting is how differently melanzana is pronounced from its spelling like so many Italian words.

There's been a really horrific bus crash on the New England Thruway this morning (about an hour ago). A southbound tour bus with 30 people evidently flipped on its side, hit the guard-rail, and slid on the rail until it hit a large pole holding up an overhead sign. That pole sliced the top of the bus off. There are at least 13 dead and it looks like some of them may have been decapitated.

This happened near Exit 14 in the Bronx.

An update on that bus crash .... as of now, 14 have died and some 7 more remain hospitalized in critical condition. NYS Police are in charge of the investigation and seem to be leaning towards speeding (by the bus driver) as the main cause of the accident.

The bus left the Mohegan Sun Casino (in eastern Connecticut) at 3:45 a.m. The accident occurred just over the Bronx, NY line at 5:35 a.m. That's a little over two hours and considering that the distance is about 100 miles, it's clear that the whole trip wasn't sped (although two truck drivers reported seeing the bus speed by them at a high rate of speed).

Tough day of following news here in the NYC area. Besides the obvious coverage of the Japan quake, there has been MAJOR flooding in the metropolitan area (mostly New Jersey). This bus crash knocked those two stories back, and as of 11:00 p.m. a cop getting shot (and killed) on Long Island tonight knocked ALL of those stories back.

Evidently, the cop MAY have been killed by friendly fire while confronting an unstable man (who ended up being killed by the police in a struggle). All this in Massapequa Park (Long Island).

Horrible story, SC.

My neck of the woods is still dealing with our own horror. Earlier this week in the nearby farming town of Loysville seven children, ranging in age from 11 to 1, were killed when their home caught fire, caused by two of the younger children playing with a space heater. The mom was milking the cows in the dairy barn while the dad was delivering a truck of milk. A three-year old girl survived and ran to the barn screaming, and the mom ran to the house to find the home engulfed in flames.

I heard that story, klyd, and didn't realize it was that close to you. Regardless, it was a terrible thing to hear about and watch on tv.

Geeez.... what a lousy streak of local news. Another cop, this time in Brooklyn, was rushed to the hospital and reportedly (NOT CONFIRMED) died from his injuries. He was called to a domestic argument at 3:00 a.m. and he was standing on the stoop of the combatants. He either fell or was pushed and sustained serious head trauma.

This came about 5 hours after a cop on Long Island was killed by "friendly fire" and a day after 14 bus passengers were killed in an accident on the highway. Seeing the absolute misery in Japan, and now the worry of nuclear meltdowns is the worst, though.

On a lighter note:

Defense lawyers are always looking for mitigating circumstances for their clients. They have to work uphill in this town:

Local paper reports today that a woman was being sentenced for a drunken assault on a firefighter. "She is one of the most pleasant defendants I have ever represented," her lawyer brightly told the judge. The woman got 120 days.
