... I'm now of the opinion that McCain had a fear of winning. I really believe he just didn't want it. Had he picked Romney as his running mate, he might very well be sitting in the White House right now...

I don't know that he actually had a 'fear' of winning, but you're right, all McCain's energy went into getting the nomination, he waited 8 years and literally HAD to have it after losing to Bush in 2000. After that, he appeared content to virtually hand the presidency to either Hillary or Obama, whoever the Dem nominee might be.
And yes again...while Palin added an excitement to the ticket, once the banking crisis hit in Sept. 2008 he would've been far better off having chosen Romney.
