I remember the huckster coming around with a truck load of vegetables, coal deliveries, and, of course, doctor house calls.

Doctor house calls. OMG, I remember a couple times as a kid, myself or my siblings, feeling under the weather, the doctor would come by the house. Geez, and after hours no less. eek Can't even imagine that today. They'd tell you to go to the emergency room.

I remember having a doctor who made house calls into my teens. His last name was Berger, and I joked that my mom should call "Ham" because I wasn't feeling well.

In addition to having seltzer delivered, we also had lox delivered for a time. It was the early '60s and we had a cat that would go crazy when the paper-wrapped fish was put near our door. My dad would get the newspapers (The Daily News and The Mirror) on Saturday night along with a dozen bagels. That was our Sunday breakfast... bagels and lox while fighting who would get the comic section.

I still have a Fuller Brush broom and brush/dustpan from the 1950's. They work fine, so I kept them after my parents retired to Florida in the 1980's. The broom has black bristles and the rest of it is painted pink!

Back in the early '60s, when we moved to Brooklyn there was a daily milk delivery in our apartment building. We had the usual metal box - actually nearly everybody in the building had one.

Avon is still alive and well; at least here in Tessio territory. As a matter of fact, Signora V. was an Avon lady for a couple of years in the early '90s. I think she was her own best customer! lol I still have boxes of beautiful Christmas decorations, earrings, pins, etc. that she accumulated with the help of the "employee discounts" (the downfall of many an Avon lady, I imagine!).

We used to have the milkman come round every week for his money. Also the pools man, which was gambling on football(soccer) results which was big 20 years before the lottery and all day gambling on the internet. The Ringtons man as well, who sold tea and coffee.

Nowadays the only person we get at our door is the window cleaner every fortnight!

A friend of mine buys from Swann's. It does cost quite a bit. I dated a woman who was in the process of getting a divorce. Her husband was a milkman. I wonder if there are any milkmen still in business.

My Dad's second wife had milk delivered while they were dating. She'd get a few glass bottles of 2% plus she'd get a couple of chocolate milk. But that's been several years ago.

We used to have our milk delivered. I loved the clink of the glass bottles. No milk has ever tasted that good. We did have the Fuller Brush man, but no soda man. My aunt and grandmother had a soda man, but I guess our building didn't have one. That soda was the best cream and root beer EVER.

DC, your story about buying stuff on time cracked me up. My aunt and uncle were famous in the family for always being in debt (my grandfather used to say that they never had the 99 cents to make a dollar). When my brother was confirmed, my uncle was his godfather, and he gave him the traditional gift of a watch. When my brother put it on, he wanted to know if the watch had been set, so he asked my uncle if it was on time. My uncle smacked him on the back of the head and said, "Hey, I paid cash for that watch!" lol

I remember that when I was in high school I wanted a jacket at a place called Kay's in East Liberty. It cost $10. My parents had to buy it on credit, but they were denied. Finally, my aunt agreed to buy it on credit for me. I loved that jacket and wore it until I outgrew it. Of course, years later it made me realize just how tough it was for my parents trying to raise all of us and that they were willing to go to my aunt to help out is really something to treasure.

That's a very nice sentiment, olivant.

I come from a large extended family that sprung from very modest means. My Aunt Lo splurged and bought a very expensive and dressy red coat for her oldest son, Sean, in the 1950s. That coat got passed from cousin to brother back to cousin again, to the point where eleven of us have a Santa Claus picture while wearing the coat. I was number 8 in the 1969 Santa picture.

Did you get around to seeing a dietician? I did and it was helpful. Writing down what you eat and knowing where your daily calorie count should be can move things along nicely.

Miniskirt Minnie

Italian town bans miniskirt
What a treat! Yet again, an elected official in a small town has decided to ban miniskirts, low-slung jeans and excess cleavage being displayed in his territory. And yet again, the usual suspects have risen to the bait, denouncing the offender for male chauvinism and other crimes against women.
...
But men in Fleet Street or Italy who send other men out to censor women's dress code ā€“ "they won't need to carry out checks close up" ā€“ are both asking for trouble and taking a small, incompetent step back towards the Taliban-esque habits of mind and action that western society has shed only recently and with difficulty.

Luigi Bobbio was elected as mayor of Castellammari di Stabia (it's south of Naples) on Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom ticket.

Wow... that book looks cool. I thought I'd pre-order it. I saw that it costs $550.00. I thought better of it. frown

One of the pics included shows Mariln Monroe and May Britt in the same picture. Britt would go on to marry Sammy Davis Jr.

I'm done with the jury duty. I wasn't picked for the trial. When I walked into the courtroom My Cousin Vinny kept running through my mind.

I had jury duty two weeks ago. I actually don't mind serving. I find it very interesting. smile Turns out though, they let us all leave. So I'm good for at least another year before they can call again.
