Varnette P. Honeywood, an artist whose brilliantly colored collages, paintings and prints presented a warm, upbeat picture of black American life and whose paintings were prominently displayed in the living room of the Huxtable home on “The Cosby Show,” died on Sunday in Los Angeles. She was 59.
The cause was cancer, Joyce Faye Allen, a cousin, said.

Leonard Skinner, the basketball coach and gym teacher who inspired the name of the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, died Monday in Florida, his daughter said. He was 77.

Skinner died in his sleep at the St. Catherine Laboure Manor in Jacksonville, where he had been living for about a year, his daughter Susie Moore said. Skinner had Alzheimer's disease.

He was working at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville in the late 1960s when he sent a group of students to the principal's office because their hair was too long. Those students later formed a band, using a variation of Skinner's name for their own.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — James Bacon, who spent six decades chronicling Hollywood’s biggest stars as a reporter, author and syndicated columnist, died on Saturday at his home in the Northridge section of Los Angeles. He was 96.

The cause was congestive heart failure, said Stan Rosenfield, a family friend.
As a reporter for The Associated Press for 23 years and later as a columnist for The Los Angeles Herald Examiner, Mr. Bacon had a knack for befriending A-list celebrities. He palled around with John Wayne, shared whiskey with Frank Sinatra, was a confidant of Marilyn Monroe and met eight United States presidents.

LOS ANGELES – Eddie Fisher, whose huge fame as a pop singer was overshadowed by scandals ending his marriages to Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor, has died. He was 82.

His daughter, Tricia Leigh Fisher of Los Angeles, told The Associated Press that Fisher died Wednesday night at his home in Berkeley of complications from hip surgery.

"Late last evening the world lost a true America icon," Fisher's family said in a statement released by publicist British Reece. "One of the greatest voices of the century passed away. He was an extraordinary talent and a true mensch."

The death was first reported by Hollywood website deadline.com.

Fisher's clear dramatic singing voice brought him a devoted following of teenage girls in the early 1950s. He sold millions of records with 32 hit songs including "Thinking of You," "Any Time," "Oh, My Pa-pa," "I'm Yours," "Wish You Were Here," "Lady of Spain" and "Count Your Blessings."

His fame was enhanced by his 1955 marriage to movie darling Debbie Reynolds — they were touted as "America's favorite couple" — and the birth of two children.

Their daughter Carrie Fisher became a film star herself in the first three "Star Wars" films as Princess Leia, and later as a best-selling author of "Postcards From the Edge" and other books.

The guy really did have a nice voice, but unfortunately, I think, he became more famous for his affair with Liz Taylor. Remember way back when every single movie magazine cover had Liz, Debbie & Eddie? I think that ruined his career. Eddie & Debbie were like America's Sweethearts and Liz was the home wrecker.

I remember mostly "Oh My Papa" and "Lady Of Spain", mainly because my brother had the records, but he was a good singer I thought. Sorry to hear of his passing. frown

That homewrecker affair didn't begin until around 1957 after the death of Mike Todd. Eddie Fisher was already a big star & quite famous by then and yes, he & Debbie were America's Sweethearts. But yes...have to say the Liz affair is probably what he is most remembered for.

I think what really, REALLY ruined Eddie's career was the coming of Liz's second great love, Richard Burton.

He was very one dimensional, though. Great singing voice, but no acting talent and not even very interesting to watch despite chances at making movies with his first two wives. Even without the scandals, I don't think he would've lasted past the 1950's.

From JG's list:

Gloria Stuart, Age 100

Played many minor roles in films going back to the 1930's but most famous today for her role as the elder 'Rose' in the horrendously stupid, 'Titanic' (1997)

Honestly, I thought she was dead already but just heard the news.

I'm not sure, but I think it was reported that this guy wasn't the inventor,(not that it really matters) but some rich dude who bought the company with some of his extra money.

Why he didn't jump off we will never know.

This just in...Wife arrested. Found out that she crazy glued the foot pad of his sedgway... more at the top of the hour. lol

Agreed. And adding to the fact he was one dimensional was the fact that he was a total jerk.

I'll never forget seeing a clip of a celebrity 'roast' honoring Elizabeth Taylor, sometime during the 1980's or 90's. One of the speakers was, of all people...Carrie Fisher.

Fisher's opening line was as follows:

"The greatest contribution Elizabeth Taylor made to our family was to get Eddie Fisher out of the house."

Actually, fans of old movies probably saw Gloria Stuart more times than they realize:

She was an absolutely gorgeous leading lady of the 1930's, and she appeared in The Old Dark House in 1932 with Boris Karloff, Raymond Massey, Charles Laughton and Ernest Thesiger. This one turns up on TCM from time to time.

Im 1938 she played opposite Shirley Temple in Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.

But her most famous (and best) role was opposite Claude Rains in The Invisible Man back in 1933. A true cinema classic.

Signora V. and I had the great pleasure of meeting her in 1993 at a convention in Virginia to celebrate the relaunch of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine. The guest list was amazing (Ray Bradbury, Ray Harryhausen, Carroll Borland, William Schallert, John Agar, Curt Siodmak and many more), but meeting Gloria Stuart was truly special. She was sweet, gracious, friendly and so down-to-earth. Our chat was very memorable.

Somewhere I have a photo of her from that day, but typical of me, I can never find anything when I need to.

R.I.P. Gloria. You were a very special lady.

My mother was terrified of "The Invisible Man". Her cousin took her to see it. If it was 1933, she was only 7 when it came out. Her cousin used to tease her all the time that the invisible man was in the house, but she couldn't see him. She still talks about it to this day, and how terrified she was.

Hiya TIS!

I should have explained a little more about this film:

For many years, it was considered "lost" - but it wasn't. It was remade in England in 1963 as a "comedy" with Tom Poston. So, the original was locked away in a vault, and wasn't shown publicly due to entanglements concerning legal rights to the property. That's why it was never released to television. I saw an absolutely pristine 35mm print of the film at NYC's Museum of Modern Art back in 1970. But, at the time, it still couldn't be shown "commercially" or released to TV.

Eventually, someone (Raymond Rohauer) acquired the rights and a vastly inferior print has been shown on television for (I'm guessing) close to ten years now. It looks dark and muddy with very little visual detail compared to the copy I saw forty years ago. A real pity. As I said, it does turn up on Turner Classic Movies every so often. It was the first American film for Raymond Massey and Charles Laughton. Ernest Thesiger had a major role - this was three years before he was "Dr. Pretorius" in the classic Bride of Frankenstein.

Incidentally, Frankenstein, The Old Dark House, The Invisible Man and Bride of Frankenstein were all directed by the same person: James Whale, who was portrayed by Sir Ian McKellan in the film Gods and Monsters.

Arthur Penn passed away.

Arthur Penn Obit

Arthur Penn, Director of ‘Bonnie and Clyde,’ Is Dead
By DAVE KEHR
Arthur Penn, the stage, television and motion picture director whose revolutionary treatment of sex and violence in the 1967 film “Bonnie and Clyde” transformed the American film industry, died Tuesday night, the day after he turned 88.

His death was confirmed by Evan Bell, a friend and accountant for Mr. Penn for 25 years. No other details were immediately provided.

A pioneering director of live television drama in the 1950s and a Broadway powerhouse in the 1960s, Mr. Penn developed an intimate, spontaneous and physically oriented method of directing actors that allowed their work to register across a range of mediums.

In 1957, he directed William Gibson’s television play “The Miracle Worker” for the CBS series “Playhouse 90” and earned Emmy nominations for himself, his writer and his star, Teresa Wright. In 1959, he restaged “The Miracle Worker” for Broadway and won Tony Awards for himself, his writer and his star, Anne Bancroft. And in 1962, he directed the film version of Gibson’s text, which won the best actress Oscar for Bancroft and the best supporting actress Oscar for her co-star, Patty Duke, as well as earning nominations for writing and directing.

Mr. Penn’s direction may also have changed the course of American history. He advised Senator John F. Kennedy during his watershed television debates with Richard M. Nixon in 1960 (and directed the broadcast of the third debate). Mr. Penn’s instructions to Kennedy — to look directly into the lens of the camera and keep his responses brief and pithy — helped give the candidate an aura of confidence and calm that created a vivid contrast to his more experienced but less telegenic Republican rival....

"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

I spotted Gloria quite by accident a few months ago in another Shirley Temple movie, 'Poor Little Rich Girl', from 1936. Shirley's 'main' costars were Alice Faye and Jack Haley...the three of them performed that terrific wooden soldier tap number toward the end of the film.

Apple, you reminded me of something I saw on a talk show when Titanic had just been released:

Now, I think the host was Jay Leno, but I can't recall 100%. What I do recall was that Gloria Stuart was being interviewed, and mention was made of her earlier career as a leading lady in the 1930's. Then a brief film clip was shown, and after it ended Ms. Stuart looked quite embarrassed and said "But that wasn't me - that was Alice Faye!"

"For me, there's only my wife..."

"Sure I cook with wine - sometimes I even add it to the food!"

"When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies?"

"It was a grass harp... And we listened."

"Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it? Every, every minute?"

"No. Saints and poets, maybe... they do some."
