CNN Poll: GOP's midterm advantage is growing

'Independents and voters who dislike both parties are starting to break toward the GOP,' says CNN's Keating Holland.
(CNN) - With November's midterm elections less than two months away, a new national poll indicates that the Republicans' advantage over the Democrats in the battle for Congress is on the rise.

According to a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday, the GOP leads the Democrats by 7 points on the "generic ballot" question, 52 percent to 45 percent. That 7-point advantage is up from a 3-point margin last month.

The generic ballot question asks respondents if they would vote for a Democrat or Republican in their congressional district, without naming any specific candidates.

"The survey indicates that independents and voters who dislike both parties are starting to break toward the GOP," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "In a year when anger at incumbents is a dominant political force, the key to the election lies among those who aren't rooting for either side."

Mike Edwards, a former cellist in the British rock band Electric Light Orchestra, died in a freak accident Friday in Devon, England. Edwards was driving a vehicle that collided with a 1,300-pound hay bale that rolled down a hill, police said.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - A Christian minister said Tuesday that he will go ahead with plans to burn copies of the Quran this weekend to protest the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks despite a warning from the top U.S. general in Afghanistan that doing so would endanger American troops.

Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center said he understands Gen. David Petraeus' concerns, but plans to go forward with the burning this Saturday, the ninth anniversary of the attacks.

Racism is racism. It's an outrageous act, but, unless it's against the law to set a fire, then I guess he can do it. I'd be concerned whether it's inciting a riot, though, given the hatred he'll be stirring up.

Yea, it's a real shame and downright scary seeing all this hate. It won't happen, but what IF the media totally ignored this story and NOBODY covers it at all??? What if these people simply didn't get the attention they crave?

I got the results of some blood work today. My triglyceride level is high.

Gotta lay off the moonshine then, Mig! Or at least not partake the night before the blood test.

To tell the truth I am not sure what triglyceride is/does. What's the doctor say Mig? Besides laying off the moonshine that is? Take care

All I know is, my dad (a retired cardiologist) saw a super-high triglycerides level one time and first thing asked me about my drinking. I had drunk plenty that night before, which skewed the results in a major way. So my point being still: don't drink (or eat anything) at least 12 hrs before a blood test!

The lab I go to doesn't even want you to eat breath mints or chew gum before a test...

He put me on a med and I have to get rechecked in November.

My sleep patterns on nights get worse. I have mentioned this before i am sure but these days i am lucky if i get 3 hours sleep during the day

No problems sleeping at night normally so to speak but can i heck as like get decent z's on night shift........

I feel for you Yogi. Are you a light sleeper normally? Although I've never worked a night shift job, I am sure I'd have a problem adjust. I am a very light sleeper normally. If someone dropped a pin, I'd wake right up wondering what the noise was. I'm thinking it'll probably take you a few weeks totally adjust.

Yogi, did you every try Melatonin?? It's a hormone our bodies produce at night, and it helps to control your sleep/wake cycle. Since you're trying to sleep in the day, it may help you to take some before going to bed when you're working nights.

Where are the lessons that Jesus taught his apostles?? How do these people call themselves "Christians" and yet ignore the lesson that Jesus taught? About acceptance and tolerance, about how we are all God's children??

Christian or not, we as people tend to bite off more than we can chew. A committment to any principles is easy enough to adopt. However, practicing them is the trick. Anger and similar emotions expressed within limits have few consequences. In this case, this pastor is finding out about those consequences: admonition, recrimination, alienation. I'm sure he didn't anticipate those.

This man is no more a Christian than O's Preacher Wright is. They both spew hate and discontent. Not the love of God.

In order to preserve the 9/11 tribute thread, I wanted to offer my viewpoint, but in a different thread out of respect.



Well said, DT. I was going to post something similar but refrained. My comment is that as a compromise to the debates about the Ground Zero Mosque and the Qu'Ran burning, we should simply flatten Afghanistan as a starting point. It needs to be wiped off the face of the earth. And if the terrorists flee to Pakistan or another country that offers a safe haven, do the same thing.

Nine years of trying to be politically correct and worrying about civilian casualties has gotten us where? The Taliban is up and running again after their ouster in late 2001. We need to stop the mentality that we are fighting a war against a country (or countries) like past wars. After billions of dollars spent, it is quite obvious that we are not. Instead, we face a cowardly enemy which hides behind churches, children, and are scattered throughout the world. Until we show them that this will not be tolerated, they will continue. I just wish that someone in this country's military had the guts to go through with it and end Afghanistan once and for all.
