While the Motor City will sparkle with Hollywood glitz and glam at tonight's "Detroit 1-8-7" premiere party at the MGM Grand Detroit, the behind-the-scenes action has been anything but flashy at the first network primetime series set and produced in Detroit.

Since production began July 20, cast and crew have been putting in 12- to 16-hour days, sometimes six days a week, as they work to stay on schedule and under budget as they work toward the Sept. 21 broadcast premiere and beyond.

As with most feature-film productions that have been accepted for Michigan's film tax incentive program, it's typically stop-and-go hustle on the set of the ensemble drama that follows the personal and work lives of a Detroit homicide unit.

Days often start about 6 a.m., and depending on the task at hand, there might be as many as 125 people on set. Camera men, lighting crews, set designers, hair and makeup specialists and the directing teams prep before the actors are brought in and cameras roll. Much of the shooting is done inside a 700-foot-by-200-foot Highland Park structure, a onetime automotive industry warehouse that has been converted into multiple soundstages by ABC Studios.

On a recent Monday, Nick Gomez is directing "Murder in Greektown/High School Confidential," the fourth episode of the series, and the third to be shot fully in Michigan.

Behind the Scenes

"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

I am looking forward to this show. I do hope it's a success. So aside from episode four, the series will only be partially filmed in Detroit? confused

I don't have too many favorite tv shows, but I do hope it isn't opposite of one of my favorites. ohwell

Thanks for the info Lilo. You should try to see if you can watch some of the filming of the show. That would be cool.

My interpretation was of the four episodes so far, three of them had been shot totally in Michigan. At least one was shot totally in Detroit. The difference is the Highland Park soundstage shooting I guess. But Highland Park is not really a suburb of Detroit-it's more like an enclave. It's a separate city smack dab in the center of Detroit, with pretty much the same demographics, architecture and economy.

Yeah, I should track down Imperioli and get the lowdown on that final Sopranos' episode.. shhh

I am trying to get into Cloverfield which is showing on FX. I never saw it and it didn't sound bad, but I am not liking the shaky hand held camera. Reminds me of Blair Witch. ohwell Still trying to follow it though, but it's kind of losing me. ohwell Then again I am kind of cheating, switching back and forth between that and Magnum Force, which I'm guessing is the better movie, but I saw it not too long ago.

I wanted to watch it, but watched AGT instead (Go Jackie!). I'll watch it tomorrow, but I've heard about the distracting camera motion.

TIS, my kids bugged me to rent it, so I did right after it came out on DVD. We all hated it and now refer to it as "Clover-failed". lol

AGT is "America's Got Talent" and Jackie is a 10 year old opera singer. She's amazing. It's incredible to hear that voice come out of that teeny little girl! She'd better be in the finale!

Magnum Force was indeed the better movie. When you're rooting against the heroes , as I did in Cloverfield, something went wrong..

The initial review for Detroit 1-8-7 was ...mixed. I am still going to watch it and make up my own mind. I do hope it's a success. Evidently some of us around here really don't like it when people say "soda". It's pop! Pop dammit!!!

lol lol

http://www.detnews.com/article/20100908/OPINION03/9080375/

ABC's new cop drama "Detroit 1-8-7" has all the local flavor of club soda in a Vernors bottle.

This is especially disappointing because of the show's considerable buzz. It is the only drama to be shot here in its entirety -- with the exception of the pilot -- all the while pumping millions of dollars into the city's economy. But if the pilot is any indication, the producers and writers behind "Detroit 1-8-7" have some homework to do.

For starters, the storyline follows a group of homicide detectives. The star is Michael Imperioli of "The Sopranos" fame. Yes, Imperioli is a tremendous actor, and his scenes are impressive, but everything about him screams New York, not Detroit. When asked in a separate interview about being synonymous with New York, Imperioli said his character is a Big Apple transplant who has lived in Detroit for nearly a decade.

At least Imperioli tries to alter his accent and phrasings to sound like he could live here, but the same can't be said for some of the actors sharing the screen with him. In one scene, an accused drug dealer is brought in for questioning, and in an accent more common in Los Angeles, he says, "You just drank the last of my soda." Huh? We don't say soda in Detroit. We say pop.

In another part of the show, Lt. Maureen Mason (Brooklyn, N.Y., native Aisha Hinds, "True Blood") is screaming at a corrections officer over the phone and says "slice" when referring to piece of pizza. That's a New York turn of phrase, no? The only character who feels like a Detroiter is Sgt. Jesse Longford (James McDaniel, "NYPD Blue"), and he's a secondary player.

On the surface, these seem like minute and easy to overlook details, but they are not. When a show is called "Detroit 1-8-7," the city is the main character and therefore the characters should genuinely reflect that city.

Look at "NYPD Blue." Dennis Franz oozed New York out of every pore. Not only was he a detective in that city, he was the city. HBO's "The Wire" is another prime example. Even when the stars didn't have that Baltimore edge, the supporting actors did and when they spoke, you could hear the blue crab on their tongues.

If "Detroit 1-8-7" doesn't get the flavor of the city and fast, producers should change the name to "Cleveland 1-8-7" because without that title, the show feels like just another police procedural with the blur of Woodward Avenue and a quick nod to American Coney Island -- not Lafayette -- in the background. It doesn't help that about 50 percent of the pilot was shot in Atlanta last winter.

As a generic crime drama, the show holds up. Producers eliminated all the documentary-style scenes from the original pilot out of sensitivity to the accidental shooting death of Aiyanna Stanley-Jones, the 7-year-old girl who died during a Detroit Police raid in May. A camera crew from A&E's "The First 48" was shadowing officers at the time. In turn, the newly shot scenes, which account for a quarter of the episode, give the show a more seamless feel.

The detectives also are well-developed and easy to follow. Imperioli's character, Detective Louis Fitch, has a dark past that begs for further pursuit. There also seems to be an untouched chemistry between him and Detective Ariana Sanchez (Natalie Martinez) that could heat up and become something intriguing. Throw in the partnership between Longford and Detective Aman Mahajan (Shaun Majumder), and there are some relationships worth investing in.

However, the relationship that needs to be pursued the most is the one with Detroit itself.

I take issue with people knowing what "flavor" Detroit has? confused I mean we all know (and love) the NY accent and atmosphere and it's flavor (as the author says). Both the East & West Coast have their "flavors" that everyone is familiar with.

I am guessing, "most" people don't have a clue as to the "feel/flavor" of Detroit, unless they are from there or around there. Let's face it, it's really not like NY, Chicago and L.A. The general public who watch will likely conclude a certain flavor though.

I remember even as a kid, going to Detroit to see relatives was always so neat because Grand Rapids (although the 2nd largest city in Michigan) was not like Detroit, Detroit had a totally different "big city feel" to it. I can't put my finger on it, but it was so cool. smile

As far as Imperioli's obvious NY accent, I don't know that will be a factor either. It sounds as though that's explained per the article by the fact he lived in NY.

That being said, however, I am biased and with Lilo here. Being from Michigan, I would love to see this show succeed and love for it to help Detroit's economy.

HOWEVER........Soda? Ha ha ha ha ha lol No, never say soda in Michigan. I always called it "pop" when I lived in MI. However, the 30 years I've been in CA it is called only SODA!!! My family still mockingly ask when I'm there, "would you like some soda? lol

I agree.

Seeing it in Digital 3D (and done fairly well) made it worthwhile -- the movie otherwise was nothing special.

I bought LOTR a couple times (would buy again, if they release the Directors Cut on Blu-Ray ohwell )... I bought all the Potter movies (DVD good enough, not going crazy over Blu-Ray for that)... but I didn't buy Avatar at all. That says something.

LFO lead singer Rich Cronin dead at 35 Sept. 8, 2010, 9:26 PM EST
WENN

LFO lead singer Rich Cronin has lost his battle with leukemia.

The boy band star died on Wednesday, two weeks after his 35th birthday.

Cronin, who wrote LFO's 1999 hit "Summer Girls," suffered a stroke and died in the hospital.

Former *NSYNC stars Chris Kirkpatrick and Lance Bass, who were friends with Cronin, have both paid their respects online.

I like Mrs. Franklin a lot but someone should tell her that Halle Berry might not be the best choice to play her. whistle

People idealize their younger selves but Aretha was NEVER skinny , even back in the sixties, and weight issues aside Halle looks absolutely NOTHING like Aretha. There would be no chance for suspension of belief. A much better choice would be Jennifer Hudson, who now that she's slimmed down somewhat , could indeed play a pre 1975 Aretha. Their look is much closer and Hudson can sing. The comments on this article are cruel but accurate...

Aretha Franklin has revealed the roster of actors and actresses she'd like to play prominent roles in a proposed film biography based upon her autobiography, "Aretha: From These Roots."

The Queen of Soul would like Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry to play her younger self, according to her press representatives. Denzel Washington is her choice to play her father, the charismatic gospel minister and civil rights activist the Rev. C.L. Franklin. She'd like Terrence Howard to enact her friend from childhood, Smokey Robinson, and indeed, Howard resembles the Motown singer strongly.

Franklin would like Nia Long to portray her sister, the singer Erma "Piece of My Heart" Franklin; and Blair Underwood would take on the role of her brother and longtime manager, Cecil Franklin.

Aretha wants Halle to play her

Okay, I watched most of Cloverfeild. Two questions: aren't movies made to be entertaining and to make money? If so, why do you think the producers made this movie?

Lilo,

Re: Aretha Franklin - As much of a Motown fan as I am, I never did care for Franklin. I guess I can appreciate her place in R&R history but Halley Berry as Aretha? lol

Oli,

As far as Cloverfield, I think you watched further than I did. The idea of a "monster" taking over NYC and and me being a sucker for a King Kong-like story (knowing of course that no NYC monster can compare to Kong) wink I thought the story-line sounded good. Perhaps that's why the decided to do this film???? They thought the camera-work might make it seem more real/scary???? confused

Sofia Coppola's 'Somewhere' wins top Venice prize
Quote:
By SHERI JENNINGS, Associated Press Writer – 1 hr 18 mins ago

VENICE, Italy – Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere," the tale of an actor who sees the emptiness of his existence through the eyes of his child, won the top Golden Lion prize at the Venice film festival Saturday.

Director Quentin Tarantino headed the jury, which unanimously chose Coppola's film as the best movie at the 11-day annual festival.

The buzz in the final days of the festival had pegged "Somewhere" as a sure winner, and the jury appeared to have had no doubts, either.

"This film enchanted us from its first screening," Tarantino said. "It has the artistry we were looking for in a Golden Lion" winner, he told the closing ceremony.

Coppola has described the film, which made its world premiere at Venice, as a "portrait of today's L.A."

"Somewhere" is the fourth feature by Coppola, who is also one of the few female directors ever to be nominated for an Academy Award — for "Lost in Translation".

In "Somewhere," Stephen Dorff plays a Hollywood star whose somewhat empty life is enriched by the arrival his daughter, played by Elle Fanning. The film takes place nearly entirely in hotels, mostly the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles.

Coppola, 39, herself grew up in the world of film thanks to her father, director Francis Ford Coppola. When presenting the film, Coppola reminisced that she and her family spent a lot of time growing up in hotels where her father was out on location while filming.

As a child she stayed at the Marmont with her father. When the film was screened at Venice, early in the festival, Coppola told reporters her father "loved" it.

"Thanks to my dad for teaching me," Coppola said, accepting the award.

Tarantino paused for a moment and seemed to fight back tears when he was about to announce that Coppola had won the Golden Lion. The two, who dated years ago, warmly hugged each other.

When asked later at a news conference if it was a difficult situation to give the prize to a friend, Tarantino replied that he didn't "let anything like that affect me."

"There was no me steering any directions. Sofia doesn't know any of these other people on the jury and her prize was unanimous," Tarantino said.

Other awards included the Silver Lion for best director, which went to Alex de la Iglesia for his "Balada triste de Trompeta" ("A Sad Trumpet Ballad"). The Spanish director also won the best screenplay award for the film.

The top actor award was given to Vincent Gallo, who played a terror suspect plotting his escape in "Essential Killing," by Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski. Best actress honors were awarded to Ariana Lebed, a Greek actress who discovers herself through her friendships, in "Attenberg," a film by Greek director Athina Rachel Tsangari.

NEW YORK – Be warned, Kanye: Taylor Swift has written a song about you, and she's singing it at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards.

The country superstar's win for best female video last year was marred when Kanye West got on stage and said it should have gone to Beyonce.

Swift wrote a song about the experience earlier this year, and a source familiar with the show said Saturday the 20-year-old will sing the new song at the VMAs, which will be aired live on MTV. The source did not want to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter.

The song is on Swift's upcoming album "Speak Now," due out in October. The source said Swift performed it during a secret rehearsal in Los Angeles for the VMAs on Friday.

Who remembers The Defenders from the 60s starring E.G. Marshall? Well, it's coming back with Jim Belushi in the lead.

E vero! Of course. I think they ought to disqualify all the others and give her the prize right now. She is unbelievable.

I agree, although that Prince Poppycock seems to have quite the following.

Watch Terriers, and Sons of Anarchy.

Also, check out episodes of Louie. (Louis CK) That season is over now though.

Long as I remember The rain been coming down.
Clouds of Mystery pouring Confusion on the ground.
Good men through the ages, Trying to find the sun;
And I wonder, Still I wonder, Who'll stop the rain.

I like this picture.

She was nothing short of amazing last night. Prince Poppycock may have blown it. Not only is "Nessun Dorma" out of his range, but it's also the aria that the winner sang (far better than PP) a few season ago, and made his own. The other singer has a nice voice, and the Fighting Gravity act is interesting, but Jackie is really in a class of her own. However, Piers was so obviously pushing her as his favorite, I hope that doesn't create voter backlash.

Robbed! Jackie was robbed! Her duet with Sarah Brightman moved me to tears.

It is so heartwarming to see a little girl meeting and performing with her idol. I don't know how Grimm generated enough votes to win.

By the way, Jackie will be on Jay Leno on the 23rd.
