SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sarah Palin will get first-class airfare for two and three rooms at a luxury hotel when she gives a speech in June for a university foundation. And organizers better not forget to stock her lectern with two water bottles and bendable straws.

The details of Palin's contract with the California State University, Stanislaus Foundation were contained in five pages of the document retrieved from a campus trash bin by students who heard administrators might be shredding documents related to the speech.

The intensely fish smell of herring has been the smell of money for generations of workers in Maine who have snipped, sliced and packed the small, silvery fish into billions of cans of sardines on their way to Americans' lunch buckets and kitchen cabinets.

For the past 135 years, sardine canneries have been as much a part of Maine's small coastal villages as the thick Down East fog. It's been estimated that more than 400 canneries have come and gone along the state's long, jagged coast.

The lone survivor, the Stinson Seafood plant here in the eastern Maine town of Prospect Harbor, shuts down this week after a century in operation. It is the last sardine cannery not just in Maine, but in the United States.

On a windy Monday night, Pete’s Candy Store—a bar in Williamsburg with a railcar-shaped performance space in the back—is crammed to capacity with the thin and the bearded.

Almost no one is drinking. The mood is pregame, expectant and nervous. We’re at one of the oddest New York City powwows in recent memory: a panel designed to quell a metastasizing dispute between bicyclists and Hasidic Jews. Except no Hasids are present. For a moment, it looks like the bicyclists will have to debate themselves.

At immediate issue is the Bedford Avenue bike lane. It’s the longest in Brooklyn and runs through every imaginable ethnic enclave—including the South Williamsburg redoubt of the Satmars, the ultra-Orthodox Hasidic Jewish sect. In December, after many complaints from the Satmars about “scantily clad” female riders, the city sandblasted off a small stretch of the lane; some enterprising bikers painted it back in protest; the city then painted over the unauthorized paint job.

Now two activists are up on criminal-mischief charges, the lane is gone, and the two groups are glowering at each other with even less empathy than usual. Worse yet, each group finds itself standing in for a larger one in a larger fight: the Satmars for all Orthodox Jews and the bikers for all young secular Williamsburgers, i.e. hipsters.

Finally, the opponents are at the door. The Hasids are a group of three led by 59-year-old Isaac Abraham, an erstwhile candidate for the City Council and a self-appointed spokesman for the Satmars. The trio is bearded, too, of course, but differently so: These are authority beards. Heritage beards.

Abraham finds his seat on the cramped stage and requests a glass of water, cracking, “Make sure it’s not spiked.” He’s attuned to the absurdity of the premise: Three Hasids and 120 cyclists walk into a bar.

Williamsburg dispute

1990 April 7th. Europe East Sea, between Norway and Denmark: arson fire aboard the "Scandinavian Star"; 159 people died. An international panel concluded in 1991 that the ship, which had just been sold by the Miami-based SeaEscape cruise line to VR DaNo Lines of Denmark for use in a ferry service, had rotted life boats and missing or insufficient fire alarms. 1991 July 14th. off the coast of Freeport Bahamas: a fire began in the engine room of the Walt Disney World owned "Majestic"; About 1,120 passengers and crew were called to their lifeboats and were prepared to abandon the ship while the crews fought the fire. The vessel was finally towed to Florida.

1994 November 30th. Indian Ocean, off Somalia: a fire broke out in an engine room of the "Achille Lauro" owned by Italy's Starlauro. Nearly 1,000 people were on board; 4 people died (2 elderly passengers during the evacuation, 1 aboard a rescue vessel, and the fourth was never found).

1995 June 18th. after a fire in the control room knocked out power the 2,560 passengers and crew aboard the Carnival Cruise Lines' "Celebration" drifted for two days with overflowing toilets and no running water. No one was injured, and passengers were transferred to the sister ship Ecstasy and brought back to Miami.

1995 July 22nd. Alaska, Prince William Sound: a fire that began in the engine room disabled the "Regent Star" owned by Regency Cruises and forced the evacuation of 1,280 passengers and crew. Two people sustained minor injuries.

1996 July 6th. Pacific Ocean, northwest coast of British Columbia: a fire broke out in the engine room of the "Golden Princess" during a cruise from San Francisco to Vancouver. About 1,200 passengers and crew were aboard vessel which was towed 60 miles to Victoria. None were injured.

1996 May 8th. off Freeport, Bahamas: a fire broke out in the engine room of the Discovery Cruise Lines' "Discovery 1"; none of the evacuated 800 passengers and 400 crew was injured.

1996 July 27th. Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Alaska: a fire on the San Francisco-based World Explorer Cruises' "Universe Explorer" with 732 people aboard was believed to have started in the laundry room; 5 crewmembers died of smoke inhalation and 70 people were injured

They are adorable. I've seen cards with baby pictures like that. I saw the photographer (or at least a photographer) who shoots those pictures on tv a while back.

The babies are so small and flexible, not to mention so sweet and innocent.

PHOENIX – Favoring the constitutional right to bear arms over others' concerns about gun safety, Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday signed into law a bill making Arizona the third state allowing people to carry a concealed weapon without requiring a permit.

The measure takes effect 90 days after the current legislative session ends, which likely puts the effective date in July or August.

"I believe this legislation not only protects the Second Amendment rights of Arizona citizens, but restores those rights as well," Brewer, a Republican, said in a statement.

Alaska and Vermont now do not require permits to carry concealed weapons.

So, does that mean that since there's no permit required that there is no background check??? Can anyone purchase a gun, no questions asked then??? God forbid we ask any questions and trample on anyone's right. I'm confused. I thought it was ok be careful when selling guns.
