Snow is one thing, but ice is pretty scary too. I use to hate driving when the road was a huge ice skating rink.

Not only that, I was prone to fall on my ass a few times too.

One of my early memories, when I was in 4th grade, at Catholic School. We went to mass every morning. I had on boots walked in church, tried to genuflect, slipped on the icy/wet floor and did an embarrassing little soft shoe with my legs kicking in the air and fell flat on my ass. The entire school (all of 100 kids) laughed like crazy. I know I was beet red and quickly slid in the pew.

It is supposed to start light snow just as I leave for work. The heaviest snow will come at lunchtime. It's not supposed to stop until tomorrow morning. Forecast says 6-10 inches. Commute home will be a pain.

Long Island looks to be the bullseye for the NY area (this time) with about 18" expected.

As bad as that will be, it isn't as bad as some others on the board will have. Geoff is looking to get another foot or more (to add to the 18" he got on Saturday). Beth, down in Baltimore, looks to add about 18" to top off the 30" she got this past weekend.

I'm off to the supermarket in a little bit...

I'm only suppose to get 12". I'm so disappointed.

SB, I was in and out at the supermarket. There was NOBODY there.... even the supermarket staff was surprised (albeit it was early when I went, the supermarket had extra workers already in anticipation of a big crowd).

But, IF you do see me in the supermarket, I'll meet you in the Frozen Food aisle (headlight city).

Is that why some guy will ask me to lean in to the freezer case and hand him the last ice cream? I never knew.

I just heard that NYC is closing the schools tomorrow (and they rarely do that).

Yes they rarely close schools here as well but they did for 2 days back in January when we got blitzed. Parents nightmare...kids' dream

Just looked up snowblower prices ($550+). Fuggedaboutit. Looks like my back will have to suffer a little 0-3 times/winter. Unless I get something like this little thing for $99...

Geoff, it's worth it to spend the money on a good one. I think we paid about $500 for ours, and that was 13 years ago. Although, honestly, you can't really use one with two feet of snow. You have to do it a couple of times during a storm, like the plows.

Besides the heavy snow later, we'll be getting some VERY windy conditions this afternoon. I'm debating on whether I should go get bagels now (the bakery opens in about a half hour).

Also stopped off at the supermarket (it was empty, but then again it was 5 a.m.). I have a "real-people" refrigerator (full of food) and am now officially hunkered down for the duration of the storm.

This is atrocious. Along with a foot or more or snow, winds are supposed to gust to 50 mph. This is looting weather. That is, if people could get out of their houses.

It's been raining/sleeting the past 8-9 hours which means a nice heavy, slippery, icy undercoating for when the snow starts up again.

Windy and about 50 degrees. Going way down tonight. Another freeze maybe.

We have about a foot right now, and it's snowing like crazy. I can't believe how it's coming down. Someone rang our bell at 10:30 this morning and asked if we wanted to hire him to shovel. The snow had barely started! My husband took his number and told him he would call him later.

Oh, it's coming down now all right. When it was JUST starting about an hour ago I went out to try and clear out where the plow had already blocked the driveway. Wasn't deep, but it was WET and HEAVY as all hell. I didn't last long out there, so it's gonna be a nightmare when this is all said and done.

...and if I remember correctly when I was a kid, snowblowers are pretty worthless when it's this wet and slushy.

Same down here. The rain was doing a good job on the snow, but it started snowing about 12:30pm and now its windy and blowing snow . I brought work home. Enough for two days. Drove my wife to work today. There was no one on the roads. All the schools are closed. Picked her up when the snow started. OOOOO, just had a power flicker. Good thing I have a little UPS/Battery Back UP. It works quite well. When the power dips I hear it click on immediately.

Its going to be another messy dig-out; heavy stuff. SB, good luck up north where its suppose to snow.

100 degrees with 95% humidity is looking real good about now. I've seen nothing but blinding snow since 6:00 last night. The monster icicles hanging from my house are another story all together.

A 3.8 magnitude earthquake rattled Chicago-area homes early Wednesday, waking up residents from Indiana to Wisconsin. The quake struck at 3:59 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

My husband put a 12" ruler outside to measure the snow. It was buried hours ago. He and the girls just went out to try and get ahead of the shoveling. It's pretty nasty out there. Still coming down, but not nearly as much as it was.

The PA Govenor shut down the major highways around Philly. Wildwood NJ hasn't recovered from Saturday's storm. There are still people without power there. Philly broke their seasonal snowfall record by 5 inches. They are at 70 inches and climbing and the winter is far from over.

Heatwave roasts Rio, kills 32 in southern Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) – The worst heatwave to hit Rio de Janeiro in 50 years turned the city into a pre-Carnival furnace Wednesday, and killed 32 elderly people further south, officials said.

According to the Inmet national weather service, recorded temperatures in Rio were well above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees) -- and felt more like above 50 degrees.

"The heatwave in Rio is seen as historic. February right now is the hottest month for the past 50 years," meteorologist Giovanni Dolif told the O Globo daily.

On Monday and Tuesday, the scalding conditions proved deadly for 32 elderly residents in Santos, a city close to Sao Paulo and 350 kilometers (220 miles) south of Rio.

Tuesday Morning we went to my in-laws to visit with the Col's Sister who got out of the hospital. They got about 5 inches. We spent the night cuz we didn't want to take a chance and get stuck.Plus they canceled my son's school for Wednesday.

We just got home tonight about 11pm what usually takes 1 1/2 hours to get home took 3 hours tonight. My Son has has no school for Thursday either. No more snow days. We got 3 more inches while we were gone.

I can't believe how much we are getting. 6 more weeks of Winter.
