I remember Jean Simmons. Sorry to hear of her passing. Looking at her list of films, I do know I've seen a few of them.

All of us are sick for having the list to begin with.

Adam Caartwright left Bonnza because he thought he was too good for the show. He then proceeded to go into years of obscurity playing bit parts like South American dictators on the old Mission Impossible until he landed another insipid series.

Can't say he'll be missed cause no one midded him in the first place.

I also heard that he left the show cuz he didn't like the story line that grown men had to ask their father for permission to do things.

If I recall he was (in real life) always the one with the attitude.

I rermember that back in the '60s he recorded an album called Pernell Roberts Sings or Pernell Roberts Sings For You or something similar. The public was underwhelmed.

As I recall, when he was starring in Trapper John, MD he refused to do any interviews with the press. This didn't exactly endear him to the producers, but he was already known for this so it wasn't a total surprise.

I thought I did too.

He was the inspiration for Terrence Mann (the part portrayed by James Earl Jones in "Field of Dreams", my favorite movie of all-time).

Dont get me wrong here,I'm sorry to see anyone die, but I think J.D. was overrated and Catcher in the Rye is seriously dated.

Well it deals with its themes in a specific social and historical frame, so it's bound to feel dated in a post-modern context.

I still think it's pretty powerful.

Haven't read anything else by him so can't rate his work as a whole. What have you read?

I agree his themes are eternal and classic, but the notion of a spoiled rich kid who gets kicked out of boarding school and wanders around New York for a night is hardly
something kids can relate to today (compare Huck Finn who still resonates IMHO). I also read Franny & Zooey , Raise High the Roofbeam Carpenters, Seymour An Introduction, and one or two short stories about the fictional Glass family in the New Yorker, but that was years ago.

Salinger was very reclusive and secretive. Apparently he would not allow his picture to be taken. It is rumored that he has been writing all these years and there's a treasure trove of stuff that will come out now that he has died, but who knows. He may end up a one hit wonder like Ralph Ellison.

I think, the catcher is still powerful. It's how young men feel in the modern world. I read it first when I was 17, and it touched me. (Remark: I grew up in East Germany!)

I was the only normal bastard in the place and that wasn't saying much.

Sad day for Days of Our Lives fans. I've been watching that soap since my Grandmother got me hooked when I was 13.

Or Harper Lee, for that matter. I hate to hijack the thread, but that's why, as monumental and groundbreaking as "Mockingbird" was, I could never consider Harper Lee a "great" author, because she never really published anything else.
