A reporter on CNN who is in the San Francisco area (near where Blib is) said he didn't feel the quake there. Apparently the quake was centered some 200 miles north of S.F.

I didn't know about it until I read about it here. We've had medium-to-small earthquakes the past couple of days here though. We're due for a biggie. It's strange the earthquake was so far north. Makes me wonder if it's the start of something big closer to where most of the faults are in the bay area. I live right on top of the Hayward fault which has a higher % of a large earthquake likely to happen than the other faults.

just asking does major earthquakes happen when a sports team from the bay make it to the word series or super bowl?

Are you treating it with a humidifier? Cool mist air USUALLY helps. Just a word of caution ~ if you are using a humidifier in his bedroom, make sure to clean the reservoir frequently and if the machine has a filter, change it frequently. You don't want to recirculate germs which have a tendency to grow inside homes in the winter dampness.

Thanks SC. We don't have a humidifier but the doctor told us to sit in the bathroom with him whilst the shower is on and there is plenty of steam.

Croup is awful. That cough!! It sounds so frightening! Just keep him in that shower. That's the cure they've been using for years, and the one they'll still be using years from now, I'm sure. You'll both be all wet and wilted, but that's to be expected when one of our little ones is sick!

Well, glad to see you're ok. I wasn't sure exactly where it hit OR where you were.

Anyway, according to this article, it was started as a rolling and ended with a jolt. From my experience, it's either one or the other. I don't know which is scarier really. I guess the quick jolts make me jump a little more. The Rollers you sort of stand/sit there and think "ok, is this the worst of it." Pretty scary sometimes though.

Actually I HAVE heard the expression "a spot of tea" and assumed it's just a little bit of tea. I think it's probably an expression before Capo's time. Just like "daft". Remember that Capo? You laughed when I once used the expression "Don't be daft?" LOL I remember seeing it a few times in movies from the 60's or so. Again, I think an old time expression from an oldie BBer.

TIS, I use daft all the time in my classes such as "My God, are you actually that daft?"

'Spot of tea' is kind of obvious. I've never had someone be like, "Care for a spot of tea?" and then NOT known what they meant by that. I mean, really.

So a "spot" is just a little bit? Like a drip? Anyone up for several hundred spots of beer, or I guess it would be ale?

LOS ANGELES - Barred from using lead in children's jewelry because of its toxicity, some Chinese manufacturers have been substituting the more dangerous heavy metal cadmium in sparkling charm bracelets and shiny pendants being sold throughout the United States, an Associated Press investigation shows.

The most contaminated piece analyzed in lab testing performed for the AP contained a startling 91 percent cadmium by weight. The cadmium content of other contaminated trinkets, all purchased at national and regional chains or franchises, tested at 89 percent, 86 percent and 84 percent by weight. The testing also showed that some items easily shed the heavy metal, raising additional concerns about the levels of exposure to children.

Oh I disagree with that.

Section 1's language is quite explicit:

No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

We also have this from John Bingham, the driving force behind ratification:

"[M]any instances of State injustice and oppression have already occurred in the State legislation of this Union, of flagrant violations of the guarantied privileges of citizens of the United States, for which the national Government furnished and could furnish by law no remedy whatever. Contrary to the express letter of your Constitution, 'cruel and unusual punishments' have been inflicted under State laws within this Union upon citizens, not only for crimes committed, but for sacred duty done, for which and against which the Government of the United States had provided no remedy and could provide none. It was an opprobrium to the Republic that for fidelity to the United States they could not by national law be protected against the degrading punishment inflicted on slaves and felons by State law. That great want of the citizen and stranger, protection by national law from unconstitutional State enactments, is supplied by the first section of this amendment."

His clear intent is to extend the protection of the US constitution to all citizens, where state laws either ignore or violate such protections.

(Thaddeus)Stevens remarked that its provisions "are all asserted, in some form or another, in our DECLARATION or organic law. But the Constitution limits only the action of Congress, and is not a limitation on the States. This Amendment supplies that defect, and allows Congress to correct the unjust legislation of the States."

And Jacob Howard , Senator from Michigan, also made the original intent very clear in debate over language of the Amendment.

"After acknowledging the important role of the testimony before the Joint Committee, Howard referred to "the personal rights guaranteed and secured by the first eight amendments of the Constitution; such as freedom of speech and of the press;. .. the right to keep and bear arms". Howard averred: "The great object of the first section of this amendment is, therefore, to restrain the power of the States and compel them at all times to respect these great fundamental guarantees".

In the ensuing debate, no one questioned Howard's premise that the Amendment made the first eight amendments applicable to the states. Howard explained that Congress could enforce the Bill of Rights through the Enforcement Clause, "a direct affirmative delegation of power to Congress to carry out all the principles of all these guarantees." Howard added: "It [the amendment] will, if adopted by the States, forever disable every one of them from passing laws trenching upon those fundamental rights and privileges which pertain to citizens of the United States, and to all persons who happen to be within their jurisdiction."
