Sorry to hear about your mom, may she rest in peace. Cancer is a bitch.
Anwyay, believe it or not, I go by "Fame" in real life as well. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, calls me Fame. Sometimes I need to look at my ID just to remember that I also got the name "Jack" written in there. My mom used to call me Jackie for some time, but I didnt like it so she stopped. Had some friends who called me "Blackjack" but all nicknames were gone and forgotten the day I ended up as Fame.

Fame,
Yeah, my mother went through kemotherapy in 2004. She stopped smoking right after, but picked up the habit again five days later. Me and my sister knew something was up a few monts before she passed because she kept giving us all kinds of gifts, like watches, pictures, food, clothes, etc. thank you for your condolences.
I have to say Jackie isn't a real bad nickname, i heard a lot worse before.
Bam,
What about Jet Li??

Sorry about your mom, Dimaggio.
Your thread brought back memories.
My dad had nicknames for my brothers, sister and me. He called me "Bipster" when I was small, which eventually turned into "Buddy B". My brother Paul, who many of you know passed away last December, was called "Wise," and my dad called my other brother "Tupper." He called my sister by the nickname of "Sweet."
When my oldest son was a baby, I called him "Jigsy," which was shortened from calling him "Jigsy McGiggles," and today even refer to him as Jigs. I nicknamed my younger son "Dunker McMulligan" when he was a baby, and my older son called himm Dee Dee, which turned into Deeds. He would cry when the song "Dirty Deeds" came on because he thought that ACDC was calling him dirty. That nickname went away. Today we call him J or sometimes J-Bird. His first name is Jared and from Little League days some of his friends have called him J-Rod.
My wife and I would always refer to my daughter as "Love" or "The Love." I also called her Sweetie Pants as a toddler, and now it's just "Sweetie."

FAME, how the hell did that ever become a nickname - there has to be a story behind it? There's not much that could have been done with Adam to nickname it. And I don't think my Ma was that imaginative to stray away from anything other than Ad. However I've had a few other names that weren't given to me by my Ma. I became Lung when I was 16 and much more recently to a select few mates I'm Tumour Boy. I used to really like Lung. Shame it never stuck.

My names are boring compared to the ones you guys posted. When I was very young my dad would call both my sister and I "punk" short for "punkin' (pumpkin). Many of my relatives call me Annie, or in the course of my life I've heard "Annie Get Your Gun", "Polk Salad", and of course "Annie Fanny" but those were short lived/occasional nicknames. I did have a cousin Mary, who's mother was also named Mary, The young Mary got tagged "Baby Mary" and it seems we called her that forever, or long enough that when she was a certain age she begged not to be called "baby". How embarrassing. TIS

I got a loving (really!) "Faccia Brutta" now and then
I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! lol Whaddaya want me to do? Whack a guy? Off a guy? Whack off a guy? --Peter Griffin My DVDs | Facebook | Godfather Filming Locations

I was my mom's favorite. (I guess there's no accounting for some people's taste). Probably because you were left on the doorstep by Gypsies! I'm not gonna fall for that .... I'm smaht, not dumb like everyone says.

I don't know about the 50s, but in the 70s I recall the 3 networks (ABC, NBC, CBS -- here, we got 2 of each, from NYC and Philly) plus PBS and maybe another station or two.
VHF went from Channels 2-13, and there were a couple UHF stations that came in as well. Not much variety.
BTW, there was an antenna on the roof that we had to rotate with a dial to point to where we wanted (NYC or Philly or wherever). Pain in the butt.
We got cable in the early 80s which had a WIRED remote with 3 rows of 13 channels, but not all of them were used I don't think. But we had HBO, MTV, etc.

how many channels actually existed in the states before 1950 then? you remember which ones? There were over 120. Remember, they were spread across the country. There were a few networks but they didn't have the same programming across the country. They were similar to radio stations that broadcast to local areas. New York City had six channels alone, before 1950. Three of them were the flagship stations of the (then) three big networks, CBS, NBC and ABC. Dumont was another and I believe they were the station that hosted the original "Honeymooners" (with Jackie Gleason). WOR and they merged - WOR later became a superstation in the 1990s. WPIX was the other - that was the station owned by the New York Daily News, then the biggest newspaper in the country. I think Los Angeles and Hollywood (combined) also had six. Remember, too, that they didn't broadcast 24 hours a day. Even in the bigger markets, like NYC, they may have started their broadcast day at 7:00 a.m. and ended before midnight then. If you tuned into one of the stations "after hours" all you'd see was a test pattern on your tv screen (if even that).
