My desktop pc was overcome with a virus last week. Long story short, after 6 days/nights of effort, the hard drive is shot. I tried reinstalling Windows, but it would not do it. Tried reformatting the C:/ drive with no success. Talked to McAfee, Dell and Microsoft. Nothing worked. What irks me is that my McAfee is up-to-date and this virus still got through.
I may spend $75 and get a new hard drive just to keep the pc for my kids. But my wife wants a laptop for the convenience.
I know very little about good features for a laptop. Basically I want to use it for MS Office, internet, music files, photos. Any suggestions on hard drive size, brands you recommend (or to avoid), etc would be appreciated. I'm thinking of sticking with Dell, but am not definite.

I know the solution is to use Firefox, but I don't get what is broken? Microsoft is what's broken. In fact, lately often so is Firefox. I've been using Google Chrome for a long while now, and for the most part it's been better/faster than even Firefox. It just doesn't have all the bells and whistles, which is fine to speed things up.
I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! lol Whaddaya want me to do? Whack a guy? Off a guy? Whack off a guy? --Peter Griffin My DVDs | Facebook | Godfather Filming Locations

anybody know how I can reestablish "standby/hibernate?" Try the "Control Panel" folder. Go to Start > Control Panel > Display > Screen Saver > Power.

From what I'm seeing from a google search, I'd try making sure your chipset (from manufacturer) and video drivers are up to date. If you had to reformat, then you'll need to update all your drivers again. If you reset your BIOS, you'll want to check those settings as well. Read over some of the search results for other ideas...
