I think mandatory auto insurance is for the 'greater good' because in case of an accident, the insurance of the driver at fault covers much of the cost (believe me, I know). Same w/ homeowner's insurance, if someone happened to slip & fall on somebody else's front steps.

But in both those instances the owner is paying for their own insurance, out of their own pocket, not having it yanked out via taxes so that they are covering every other home or car owner in the country, like it or not. Which is Big Brother-ish.

So the spirit of the intent is absolutely not the same.
