I've become a very big fan of topographical art of late; reading Joyce's Ulysses as a document to the physicality of Dublin, and watching Patrick Keiller's films, London and Robinson in Space. There's something fascinating when such fundamental material details foreground a narrative. To a lesser extent, the role of 'the city' - in particular, Baltimore - in The Wire, a drama about urban decay under unbridled capitalism.
