If you remember, Vito had a public meeting with Fanucci in regards to paying him off...."wet my beak..."


The way I see it, people in the neighborhood saw the two men together and if you've ever lived in a community that was so self contained as theirs was, everyone knew everyone else's business, especially as it pertained to the man who ran that section of town.

The local paisan knew Vito owed Fanucci, saw the two in the coffee shop. Although everybody saw Fanucci walking home, he was found dead later that day. 2+2=4.
