So I'm headed back home to Maryland this coming Saturday to visit my family. God, it's already been almost a year and two months since I moved to SoCal. It'll be nice to see some familiar faces from back home....but the REAL reason I'm going home is for the food! I sure do miss my country food...texas fried steak, mashed potatoes and wilted lettuce salad, my dad's fried chicken, my dad's steak...hell, anything my dad cooks is great

Oh, and scrapple. I mention scrapple around here and all I get is weird looks. I probably miss scrapple more than anything

If you're talking country fried steak that they serve in restaurants..you know breaded with mashed potatos/gravy, I love it too. I have never made it though.

I also like cube steak, but haven't had it in a long long time. There aren't too many meat dishes I don't like. I even "don't mind" liver. I haven't made it in a long time though either, but I will eat it.

Chicken fried steak.

On Sunday it was really sunny outside but there was a very strong cold wind so everyone was miserable because they wanted to be outside. Then I remembered we bought a couple of kites a few years ago and never used them. So I put them together and took the family up to the elementary school field. It's the first time I've flown a kite since I was a kid! I forgot how much I love the sound the kites make.

Early on I let out all the string only to discover the string wasn't tied to the reel thingy and it took off on me. I had to chase it to the end of the field before it got away. Then our other kite, a butterfly one, wouldn't stay up in the air more than a minute before it would nose dive into the ground. So while I was out there trying to fix it my girlfriend was flying our other one, a cool pirate ship kite. The pirate ship kite decided to nose dive as well and landed right on my head, giving the family a good laugh.

It turned out the kids were more interested in riding their bikes and playing in the playground, so it was me and my girlfriend having fun being kids flying the kites.

I really hate to sound like an old foagy, but since I don't have much contact with kids these days, I'll ask .... don't young kids like to do this stuff anymore (fly kites)??

I think I flew a kite once. I much preferred basketball and riding my bike.

Near Miami is Haulover Park and Marina. One side of Collins Avenue is the clothing-optional beach on the ocean. The other side of Collins is the Intracoastal side, where there is a marina, restaurant and kite store. You can see the kites in the air for miles.

I can't remember the last time i saw a kid round my way flying a kite?

Most of them are high as kites mind

Yeah, I never see any of the kids around here flying kites either. I wonder why?

They are all in their bedrooms on their PC's and Playstations!

We moved to our house almost 13 years ago. At the time, our neighbor had a six year old son and a girl who was eight or nine. We could count the times on one hand we ever saw them playing outside.

That's true. Things certainly have changed. At the school I work at, during lunch, it's computer games, Ipods during breaks. I never see in my neighborhood, anybody (young girls anyway) rollerskate in the neighborhood, or play jump rope, etc. Heck, when I was kid it was nothing unusual to see kids playing kick the can in the street. Is that even heard of today?

The advancements in technology is wonderful and I do think we will and should continue to advance, but think about it. How lazy is that making everyone, when everyone is addicted and spoiled by it?
