WASHINGTON - Severe depression may silently break a seemingly healthy woman's heart.

Doctors have long known that depression is common after a heart attack or stroke, and worsens those people's outcomes. Monday, Columbia University researchers reported new evidence that depression can lead to heart disease in the first place.

The scientists tracked 63,000 women from the long-running Nurses' Health Study between 1992 and 2004. None had signs of heart disease when the study began, but nearly 8 percent had evidence of serious depression.

The depressed women were more than twice as likely to experience sudden cardiac death — death typically caused by an irregular heartbeat, concluded the 12-year study, published Monday in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. They also had a smaller increased risk of death from other forms of heart disease.

The big surprise: Sudden cardiac death seemed more closely linked with antidepressant use than with the depression symptoms the women reported.
That might simply mean that women who used antidepressants were, appropriately, the most seriously depressed, cautioned lead researcher Dr. William Whang. But he said the finding merited more research.

I won't lie. I've been smoking again. But, I've literally cut down to about 5 a day. After meals is basically when I smoke and maybe one or two at random times. I really wanna quit, But I think my best bet is to cut down first then go from there. I've got a lot more music to make and a baby on the way and I wanna be there to see it come to fruition. I find when I'm drinking the hardest to not smoke, But i keep myself distracted and stick to no more than 5 a day.

Whisper, that's certainly a great first step. I'm proud of you. My dad smoked that way for years. He would have four a day - one after each meal, and then one more before bed. His cardiologist told him that it was four too many, so he gave it up completely. And you're right. He found it much easier to quit.

Why is it so bloody hard to add an album to the "what we look like thread"

My days off this week are Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday and then in for 4 nights through till Monday morning?

So i was happy when i got the call for over time on Monday and Tuesday

I wasn't so happy when i was put on the rubbish rota for both days. Collecting rubbish in a hospital is just rubbish to be honest. The amount of crap that gets thrown out is unbelievable and some of the clinical waste stinks

Never mind though,over time is over time and i spent a very enjoyable day off today.

Now onto these damn night shifts

My new job is pretty cool, going in for more orientation soon.

The Col does the swing shift to. This week it's 3-11. Next week it's 11-7.

This was very sad. I did not know the actress, but have always liked Liam Neeson. It's shocking how a seemingly innocuous fall can result in death. I hope her family finds comfort.

My husband can keep The Weather Channel on for hours?? What is up with that? I mean, you see the forecast, you move on. It's not going to change!!!

My MIL is the same way with Fox News and CNN. It drives me crazy.

My girlfriend and I just went to visit her cousin yesterday, and it's the same thing. Every time we go there the channel never changes away from the weather channel. I tried to sit there and act interested but I couldn't do it.

In such times, you should make a really inappropriate comment/joke and go back to watching the channel. After some uncomfortable silent moments, someone will change the channel.

I usually just wait until my husband dozes off and then I change the channel.

Thank God for more than one tv in the house.

We have more TVs than people in this house, and we'll all fight over the one in the family room. I like to be with Mr. Babe when he's watching, so I'll hang out with him, even if he's watching something I don't like.

And what about the Col.? The Playboy channel?
