I'm sure many of the others from my age range can add other stories (MaryCas, Turnbull, dt, TIS, goombah, feel free to chime in here).

Some of the kids, even then, would say that we were all going to die if an A-bomb or H-bomb hit but I was confident that if I hid under my desk I'd survive. Ah, the innocence of youth. That all changed after I read the book "Hiroshima" (by John Hersey) which was required reading in junior high school. (If you haven't read it, I HIGHLY recommend you do so. It's a short book recalling the absolute horror of atomic warfare from its survivors).

And to Marcy Spatt, my desk partner and one of my first crushes, thanks for not ratting me out when I'd pinch your butt during the air-raid drills under our desk.
