I wouldn't say it was nothing. I wasn't alive in 1972, but I'm pretty sure it was one of the early films about ruthless killers that killed and raped for fun... and actually showed the brutal violence.

As you mentioned with The Blair With Project, it was a success due to the creative marketing campaign, but because of the creative marketing a new type of horror film was brought to the masses and inspired new ways of thinking in horror filmmaking for years to come.

While I have issues with the out-of-place comic relief, I think Last House on the Left deserves credit for influencing the genre.
