Good comparisons, DD. smile
The movie took some big liberties with the book:
In the book, Brasco gives Lefty credit as a good earner and having enough influence to win a sitdown with Tony Mirra about who "owned" Brasco. But he had no respect for Lefty, whom he described as a chisler and whiner, always trying to get money out of him. In the movie, Lefty's portrayed as the Mafia schlemeil and loser, but Brasco has real filial piety for him. Actually, Brasco developed affection for Sonny Black.

The movie portrays Brasco as actually gathering big money to offer Lefty to quit the Mob life. No such thing happened.

The movie also had two key deletions from the book: the fascinating story of how Brasco got close to the Mafia boss of Milwaukee; and the whole story of his involvement with Tony Mirra, "a very scary guy."
