AOL posted a list of the 10 movies that they think you should see before you die, listing our beloved Godfather at # 1. ---------------------------------- 1 - The Godfather 2 - Titanic 3 - Gone With the Wind 4 - Batman Begins 5 - Star Wars 6 - The Sixth Sense 7 - The Breakfast Club 8 - Moulin Rouge 9 - The Naked Gun 10- Amelie ----------------------------------- " No Good Film Collection Is Complete Without These Classics" - AOL I don't particularly agree with the order of this list, and furthermore I can think of a lot of other movies that SHOULD be on this list instead of movies like Titanic, Batman Begins, The Naked Gun, Moulin Rouge, The Sixth Sense and The Breakfast club. Not saying that those I mentioned above are not good movies, but in my opinion they have absolutely no place on a top ten list of movies that you must see before you die. Looks to me that AOL's real agenda in putting out this list is to sell some of these movies rather than sincerely compiling a list of top ten movies to see before you die.
Don Cardi Five - ten years from now, they're gonna wish there was American Cosa Nostra. Five - ten years from now, they're gonna miss John Gotti.

I don't particularly agree with the order of this list, and furthermore I can think of a lot of other movies that SHOULD be on this list instead of movies like Titanic, Batman Begins, The Naked Gun, Moulin Rouge, The Sixth Sense and The Breakfast club. Completely agree; but then, I'd probably disagree with any top ten list. This is a good opportunity for a thread, though. I'd be genuinely interested if people here gave some thought, then posted what they personally thought were ten films everybody else should see. They should give a few brief lines, too, to validate their choice; I know I would take interest. Anybody else up for that?

well here I am watching the boriympics at 3:30 AM in the morning so yes, I am up for that! like you said Capo, these are the 10 movies that I personally think everybody should see. believe me, I'm trying to spread it out as long as I can in terms of genre and directors, because a first draft of my top ten list would be even more repetitive and predictable. 10 - Trainspotting (1996) A head dive into the lifestyle of heroin addicts in hopeless Scotland in the mid 90's - "It's SHITE being Scottish! We're the lowest of the low. The scum of the fucking Earth! The most wretched, miserable, servile, pathetic trash that was ever shat into civilization. Some hate the English. I don't. They're just wankers. We, on the other hand, are COLONIZED by wankers." says Ewan McGregor's Mark Renton. If not for anything else, you should see this movie just to know you should stay away from heroin, but you could also enjoy superb acting, amazing soundtrack and a frantic storyline full of bizarre situations that are so common in the life of a junkie, all working as a build up to one of the greatest ending sequences of all time. Enjoy at your own risk! 9 - The Shining (1980) "Hereee's Jooohnny!" - Stanley Kubrick has made some of the most iconic films of all time, but if there is one of them that everyone should definitely see, I believe is this one. A full of depth horror classic that has been ripped off in the past 25 years without seeing anyone get even close to its impact. 8 - Apocalypse Now (1979) I felt like I needed to throw in a war movie, and in my opinion this is the best of them, not to mention it fits right in on any list of the best movies ever. As long and exhausting as a trip way up the Nung River, Apocalypse Now is a rare case of a masterpiece that relies more on apocaliptic images than plot development. it doesn't matter, it's just a matter of enjoying the ride and trying to stay alive. no wonder why it was so difficult to finish and why people almost lost their minds doing it. 7 - No Country For Old Men (2007) The most recent masterpiece brought to our eyes. I could use half the spots of this list with films from the Coen Brothers but I'm really starting to believe that No Country For Old Men is their best work so far. I really believe everyone should see Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski and others, but there's something about last year's academy awards winner that got me. It is so penetrating, so meaningful in its silence, I don't know how many times I could watch it without getting bored. 6 - Scarface (1983) One of the most charismatic characters ever and one of the greatest acting performances of all time. What else do you want? Everyone here knows what I'm talking about and after rewatching Scarface a few weeks ago it climbed back in my rankings. The chainsaw sequence in the beginning of the film might be the best "deal gone wrong" scene ever. stay tuned for the top 5 on my next post!

finally here it is my top 5! I know you couldn't wait 5 - Cidade de Deus (City of God) (2002) Seriously, I don't think you can call me a homer for ranking Cidade de Deus that high. If you don't have a beef against fast-paced, over edited full of violence flicks, you have to see this one before you die. Fernando Meirelles and a bunch of kids from the slums of Rio de Janeiro made Hollywood careers out of it and brazilian cinema never was the same anymore. not after its own GoodFellas! - the comparision stands. 4 - Pulp Fiction (1994) Nowadays it is a cliche to place Pulp Fiction up on any pop culture related list, and I really can not think of a reason to go against the flow. For a guy living in this world full of information, where all kinds of bullshit are thrown upon you, such a piece of clever-badass filmmaking must be appreciated. 3 - GoodFellas (1990) this one is so good, it inspired to me write the only nice review I've ever written in my opinion this is the best movie in Martin Scorsese's great career full of classics that could be in this list. the film runs so naturally, it looks so beautiful, you really enjoy the nights at the restaurant with all the wiseguys, and you sense Henry's state of mind as his life becomes a chaos after he comes back from jail and keeps his Pittsburgh connection, under Paulie's disapproval. In the end, he has to make a simple choice: become a rat and die inside, but keep living with his wife and daughters under FBI's witness protection program or really die, by the hands of his lifetime friend Jimmy. 2 - The Godfather Part II (1974) Another no brainer but what can I do? Francis Ford Coppola had another hard mission in keeping it up with the flawless and succesfull GF1 and he delievered it. The Michael/Vito, rise and fall, back and forth story with the use of flashbacks as counterpoints to the main plot, and the impact caused by Michael Corleone in the end of the film make GF2 worth the silver medal. 1 - The Godfather (1972) One of the greatest acting performances of all time and an overall flawless portrait of the golden years of the Italian Mafia in the U.S., in the roots of its top control. But even if you are not into all of that, you should just see it to understand all the quotes from it in other movies, the Mob bosses characters inspired in Don Corleone, the Marlon Brando impressions, the funny spin-off episodes from Seinfeld, The Simpsons, and others...
