Some of you may not know that Michael and Don Vito Corleone make cameo appearances in Mario Puzo's book The Sicilian.

While they are not a part of the main storyline, Puzo found an ingenious way to tie them in nevertheless.

It's a very entertaining book and while Puzo may not have written a second Godfather book, Michael and Don Vito appeared in more than one of his books.

Along with Don Vito and Michael, Clemenza, too makes an even smaller appearance in The Sicilian. And, also Clemenza's brother, Dominic, who only appears in The Sicilian, but reminds me of Pentangali's brother in GFII. Remember, Frankie Pentangali was oringinally suppose to be the same character as Clemenza, hence the brother from Sicily was originally suppose to be Dominic Clemenza.

What I like the most in those parts, is how Puzo describes the change in Michael, as Clemenza "surveys him fondly". He writes that "It was not just a young war hero" anymore. In his years in Sicily a boy had grown into man, which means his face was no longer open. It had a proud closed look of a born Sicilian." For me that's exactly what Michael had to become, and was since. The trials and misfortunes strenghtened him, as they usually do real manly characters.

What was Michael and Vito's purpose in the book?

To sell more books.

Their "appearance" in "The Sicilian" had nothing to do with the storyline. It allowed Puzo to cash in on the success of "The Godfather" and "sucker" some people into buying/reading an otherwise just OK book.

I have purchased The Sicilian. I am on currently on CHAPTER 1: MICHAEL CORLEONE, and it seems as if Michael is the main character in the book. If he is not the main character, I expect it to be Salvatore Giuliano.

Yes, people like me! I remember when the book came out and it mentioned that Godfather characters were in it, I swooped it right up and bought it! It turned out to be an Ok story though.

I loved The Sicilian. I thought that Puzo did a remarkable job telling Giuliano's story (fictionalized, of course) and his reign did coincide with Michael's time in Sicily. I thought the interweaving of the stories to be rather clever.

I hope they do make Omerta into a movie. Anyway The Sicilian, great book, I must admit I did look forward to reading more about Michael. But Turis parts where good to.
