Window unit. I have it set to 70° so the compressor doesn't have to go on/off too frequently. This is the fifth year I've had it, so hopefully it'll make it through another season.
What's bad is that my apartment is on the top floor of a house, and it's right under the roof. My landlord's place (downstairs) is a LOT cooler. I don't have any a/c in my living room and it's currently 89° in there (even with a ceiling fan going).
My cat and I have camped out in the bedroom for the past three days. He still insists on cuddling next to me in bed (but I don't really mind).
Never underestimate the comfort of friendly feline.
We have a heat pump and the a/c is pretty good in the house. The basement, which is exposed, stays nice and cool and the ground floor is pretty comfortable. On the second floor our two front bedrooms get the warmest as they face the afternoon sun. We often need to keep a fan on at night for my son.
