Ah, remember after September 11th, when everyone was crying for an end to dependence on foreign oil? Hey, do what the Europeans do! BUY SMALLER CARS!

I do have to say that our lifestyle doesn't allow our dependence on cars to be cut as easily. For example, I live in suburban NY. The average commute time is 45 minutes. There isn't a European in the world who would drive that far to work. Thanks to suburban sprawl and the lack of sidewalks, we can't walk to the local deli to buy a quart of milk without risking our lives. Our public transportation system sucks, which forces more people into their cars.

We need to rethink our way of life, not just buy hybrids.
