Absolutely, positively, unquestionably, and without a doubt. By no means is it a "great" book from the standpoint of literature, but its required reading for any fan of the film(s).
And to Silvia Lombardi: All books are NOT necessarily better than the movie. And if there ever was an example of the movie being better than the book, its Godfather.

As plawrence already stated...I wouldnt call it a fine piece of literature...I mean its no James Joyce's Ulysses or anything but as far as storyline's go you can't beat The Godfather....plus you learn more in the novel than is shown in the film.....READ IT!

I HIGHLY recommend it. It's definately a MUST READ for all fans of the movie and Mario Puzo. You kinda get to see the "Bigger Picture", a more in depth look of the story.

"The Godfather" is a very addictive book. I've re-read it countless times. I never get tired of it. It will definitely expand your knowledge of the movie tenfold.

I am almost finished......it enables you to understand more of why certain decisions are made...more of a background so you're not left guessing after watching the movie.... However, as many posters have mentioned in various threads, I have noticed the whopping amount of typos and other mistakes in the book. It's rather shameful for Random House (or whoever the publishers are) not to have fixed those in and by this day and age. Surely it reflects more badly upon them than it does upon Mario Puzo (r.i.p)
