Carlo was given a piece of the family business. What was it - the gambling sector?

In the Sunday dinner scene, Sonny goes on and on about how the (N-word) are driving their Cadillacs, and things. Carlo responds with "I knew that was going to happen." What did he 'know' was going to happen.

Later, in the scene just before Sonny beats the crap out of him (in his orange leisure suit), Carlo sounds like he's making threats to someone. Can anyone make out what he is referring to?

I looked on the other Carlo strings but didn't find anything.

Bookmaking, sounds like numbers too.

The guys in harlem were ripping off their customers and flashing their wealth at the same time.

Long as I remember The rain been coming down.
Clouds of Mystery pouring Confusion on the ground.
Good men through the ages, Trying to find the sun;
And I wonder, Still I wonder, Who'll stop the rain.

Carlo ran a small book. As mentioned running a book probably leads a person to engage in loan sharking and numbers as well.

However (per novel) he wasn't very good at it. He messed up the betting lines and cost the Family money. So when the Don heard about this he ordered that all of Carlo's work be double-checked. Actually Carlo's subordinates would independently get the odds and ensure that Carlo didn't screw up.

As far as the comments about Blacks, I think Carlo was just kissing Sonny's butt, trying to make himself seem more knowledgeable and important. Outside of Tom, Mike and Vito there don't seem to be many people who disagreed with or challenged Sonny anyway.

Since the Don was adamant at the wedding that Carlo NOT be brought into the Family business and yet Carlo is (at least on paper) running a book, either the Don changed his mind or more likely the Don's comment regarding Carlo was about any topics or business restricted to formal (made) family members. That explains why Carlo is told to go with the women when the Don returns.

So Carlo is given a living and proceeds to make the worst of it which (per novel) confirms the Don's dislike of him.

Carlo was a screw-up. He expected to be taken care of by the Corleone Family and resented the small level of responsibility he had been given. All he had to do was earn a living and make Connie happy.

Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

Also, after Sonny's murder, the Don directed Hagen to put Carlo in the unions where he could do alot of talking which the Don consider he was good at.

Bookie, giver of advice to corner hoods on who to bet on, made enough money to take his girldfriends out to dinner. And believer that he would become Michael's right hand man in Vegas.
Yeah, sure.

In other words the George Costanza of The Godfather.

He was a whiner and complainer. He would have fit in well with today's "I'm a victim" society.

Carlo was sent to pick people up at the airport and to run some mickey mouse nightclub someplace. It didn't turn out too well, so they gave the job to Fredo. That didn't work out too well either.
