There is a plethora of books about Hitler and the Third Reich by John Toland, Joachim Feist, Cornelius Ryan, and William Shirer just to name a few. I've read many of them and they do not support the contention that, generally, the German people during that period feared Hitler. Oh there's no question about it, the Germans followed Hitler not b/c they feared him, but b/c they AGREED with him. Most Germans at that time wanted to kick out the immigrants just as much as Hitler did. Do these feelings still exist today? Well, let's consider the fact that anyone wanting to expatriate from Bavaria must receive special permission from the Bavarian government. And of course, you and I (or anyone else for that matter) would probably have a better chance of moving to Mars then we would the fabled principality of Bavaria. Another book I would recommend is George Bailey's Germans. Bailey was a liaison officer who served as a translator during WWII. He argues that one of the most shocking and appalling aspects of the war was the lack of an underground movement in the German art world against the Nazis. There should have been an absolute flowering of anti-Nazi literature, film, music, etc., which should have emerged out of the underground after the war was over; some of the greatest art the world had ever known, forged during the most trying of times, but it simply didn't happen. Long story short: The Germans knew what they were getting with Hitler and they wanted it.

I don't think it takes a Nobel Laureate nor MENSA Grand Poobah to realize and appreciate what's requested here...
