I've learned that sometimes certain words/phrases come from certain areas, and not others.

When I first moved here, I did substitute office work (before I got in permanently) for the schools in my city. I told my boss that it was kind of "nippy" outside. He smiled and kind of chuckled, and looked at me and said, "you're not from around here are you?" I learned they don't use the word "nippy" in CA

Also, NOBODY ever ever calls coke, pepsi, etc. POP. Ha ha ha ha...it's definitely called "Soda" here in CA. I remember first ordering it in a restaurant here and the waitress asked me "what's that?" "Oh, you mean soda?" \:o I use to always call it pop in Michigan. Now, I never do, and when I went back to visit my family, I chuckled because they called it pop.
