Depends on what you like, I suppose. You can either look at it as lazy continuity, or making the most of the actual form - a television series. Chase and co. found it quite a challenge and a thrill to write individual, self-enclosed episodes and still do the overall arc thing. Some people, on the flip side, find it challenging but not thrilling to watch something so fragmented and lacking continuity. I accepted it after season 3, really.
I like it because you can either watch a random episode and not be lost or you can watch it in order and see the overall arc of the story.
