I just read that prior to casting Robert Shaw, Steven Spielberg wanted Sterling Hayden (Captain McCluskey) for the part of Quint. It seems that Mr. Hayden had some IRS situation that prevented him from taking the part.

All I could picture was Quint getting Hooper and Brody to hold the shark while he broke its jaw.
