Bahfangul? what does it mean?

Carlo says it to Connie and she says it back to him before their fight.

-In my HOME!!! In my BEDROOM WHERE MY WIFE SLEEPS!! Where my children come and play with their toys. In my home.

-My father taught me many things here -- he taught me in this room. He taught me -- keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.

Va (Vai) fare en culo. It's sounds differently when a native Italian speaker says it just like when a native english speaker says sonmething like Where ya goin'.

Go to make in your a**. Actually, up your a**.

It's colloquial

In the screenplay, FFC & Puzo spell it "bafangool."

In Northern Italian, it's "a tan cul," meaning "up your ass."

In a van down by the river!
I'd always heard "va fan cul"

Long as I remember The rain been coming down.
Clouds of Mystery pouring Confusion on the ground.
Good men through the ages, Trying to find the sun;
And I wonder, Still I wonder, Who'll stop the rain.

Whether you pronounce it "vafancul", "bahfangool" or any of the other myriad variations, all roads lead to Rome (as the saying goes).

For a little more on this, our Don Malta's Godfather Trilogy website has an educational page of foul vulgarities that may make you the life of the party (or, more likely, get you encased in cement):

X-Rated "Essential" Italian

Look under "culo". (Sorta sounds like a Stephen King book, doesn't it?)

Caution: The language is quite vulgar, so consider yourselves warned.

Signor V.

"For me, there's only my wife..."

"Sure I cook with wine - sometimes I even add it to the food!"

"When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies?"

"It was a grass harp... And we listened."

"Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it? Every, every minute?"

"No. Saints and poets, maybe... they do some."

Yeah, it's just a matter of pronounciation. My dad was fluent so he'd say things that I couldn't for the life of me understand. He'd actually laugh at the way I pronounced some things. It's like in endlish when you say things real fast like D'jit jet? It's actually Did you eat yet. A fluent Italian is going to rattle off stuff in Italian that are going to fly right by us.

My favorite is capocolla which many people (including those who do closed captioning) gabagool.

Agreed - He exists but to serve.

So, why do I keep getting all those "Cannot Find Server" messages?

And this post is related to the pronounciation and spelling of Italian words how?

I've posted this story before (but not recently ;\) ):
I used to be the editor of a company newspaper for a big corporation. The company supported several hundred clubs. One of them was a bocce club, and they built a nice bocce court on the grounds. Leagues were formed. One year, a group of WASP managers defeated the all-Italian-born groundskeepers. The captain of the WASP team sent me a blurb to publish on his team's victory. The team's name was the "Fun Ghouls" . I had the pleasure of calling him to tell him that I couldn't publish the item because his team's name was an Italian obscenity that had no place in a company newspaper. He had no clue...

Either way, its too offensive for Bravo Network - Bahfangul you! was redubbed to something silly.

If memory serves, I think the redubbed version translated into "Go to the devil."

Next time I watch my tape of the Saga, I'll have to pay closer attention to this scene.

While on the subject of Italian obscenities, what does "spacheem" (sp) mean?

Check my earlier post in this thread and you'll find a very useful link.

Svacheem is the male ejaculate.

It, surprisingly, is sometimes used as a term of endearment (as if a father would lovingly say "you're from my sperm").

A Napolitan' in my old Brooklyn neighborhood told me that "sfacheen" (as it's pronounced) means "jerkoff," and is part of a curse, as in "sfacheen a tu e tu patrie."
