Growing up, I had two older brothers, so my wardrobe consisted almost entirely of hand-me-downs. Most of my pants had those iron on patches on the knees.
Today the kids call them designer jeans! Pre-washed (worn) with designs (holes, patches and tears) in them and pay $100 a pair.
Yea and for 100 bucks they are 5 sizes to big, hanging down their ass(es)! (at least out here in CA they are). I saw a young boy after school talking on a cell phone with one hand and holding up his pants with the other.

The shorts also now fall somewhere around the shins. One of my older son's buddies didn't know why I was laughing when he said he needed a new swim suit because his old one was ripped at the knee.
