I remember my mother darning socks. Who does that anymore?
I use to hate it when they were darned by the toe or heel. It'd rub agains my shoe and feel very uncomfortable.

Growing up, I had two older brothers, so my wardrobe consisted almost entirely of hand-me-downs. Most of my pants had those iron on patches on the knees. I swear my mother used to buy those patches in bulk.
