Its much looser.. Back in the early 1900's there were Germian, Irish, Jewish, Italian etc sections of New York, and they barely overlapped.
True story ... the Chinese and Jewish sections of New York were both on the lower east side, and the Jewish people had never had anything like Chinese food before, and many of them developed an affinity for it because it was such a novelty.
