It's "only" about $2.89 here in Morgantown. Still ridiculous though. For the first time in my life, I'm glad I don't have a car.

There was an article in our local paper - "The Press" (Atlantic City) that said New Jersey was the cheapest in the country - $2.78 per gallon (I paid 2.75 the other day). They said it was due to low state tax on gas. But why should one state be $4.00 and another $2.78? If it's tax, then your local government is screwing you. If it's not tax, then some rich bastards are getting richer. Funny that NJ and Oregon are the only two states that don't have self-serve gas.

I said this before, but I pay $7.29
I guess it's irrelevant and not comparable to American prices, though.

It's state governments that levy gasoline taxes. I'm not aware of any state that allows municipalities to levy a gasoline tax. In any case, such taxes are set annually. So, the increase in fuel prices is likely due to increases in what the supplier pays for the fuel. I just paid $2.86 in Texas. Supply and demand.

On Hardball I just heard Jim Cramer say that he thinks gas prices will start to decline in about three weeks.

Just in time for the kick-off of the summer driving season, when gas prices traditionally go UP?? Interesting theory.

Weird... on CNN today they said there is a low supply of refined gas and a backup at the refineries, and that it may go to $4 a gallon.

Don T -

Read one of my lengthy posts above where I talk about refinery shutdowns due to "maintenance" which are slowing down the conversion and refining of crude oil to gasoline. What a coincidence that just as we are coming upon the driving season, these refineries decide that it's time to do maintenance.

Our representatives should propose legislation forcing these refineries to schedule their shutdowns for maintenance purposes at a time of year when gasoline and heating oil are at their lowest demand and not at a time of year where gasoline or heating oil is at a high demand. Manipulative crooks.

Enzo - Holy shit! U.S. Dollars? That's ridiculous! Then we shouldn't be complaining over here! WOW!

Oli, maybe it started already. The station that charge 2.75 on Monday, lowered their price to 2.73. (Gotta have a WaWa!)

I heard it's likely they'll stay high through Memorial Day. After all, a lot of people travel during that time. They sure don't want to lose out on that profit. I just wonder "if" it ever goes down a significant amount, what it'll level off at.

Texas Legislature is considering lowering State gas tax thru the summer months. Also considering imposing a requirement on stations to calibrate fuel temperature with outside temperature.

On another note, Its House passed a law that prohibits red light cameras. It goes to the Senate where it is likely to pass. Don't know what the Governor will do though.

If the past is any indicator, I think Memorial Day will be the beginning of the higher prices. Don't they usually "justify" the higher fuel costs throughout the summer, stating that more people are driving and on vacations? It has been ridiculously high since Katrina IMO and it has not really let up. My guess is that it will approach/exceed $4 per gallon by Labor Day 2007.

I remember there is a scene in Die Hard where the Twinkee eating cop is next to a gas sign. Wanna know what it was in 1988 in California, when the movie was made? $.88!!

When I go to the gas station I have to keep my eyes away from the prices because I know it'll just anger me. I have to buy gas no matter what so I just get out of there as quick as possible.

I got my license in 1994, and gas was $1.06 a gallon. So in just 13 years it has more than tripled here... what the heck.

When you think about rising fuel costs (not only gasoline, but electric and heat, too), and what that has done to the average household budget, I don't understand how they can justify the low inflation numbers. Makes no sense to me.

And my taxes, too. They've pretty much doubled in the 10 years that I've lived here. With the new school budget that's up for a vote next week, I'm sure that they will approach, if not surpass, $14,000 this year.

Gas prices went up about 6 cents from Friday to Monday. I know we have some smart attorneys on the board and some finance guys. I have a question. Why do ALL the gas station prices go up at the same time? What causes this and what permits this? It sounds like a conspiracy. How about the RICO act? Is there any government official with the balls to challenge these greedy pigs?

I could give an economics based answer to this, not so much restricted to gas prices though.

There are Market Setters and Market Dependents (I know I have those names wrong) but basically certain companies set prices and all other companies follow. So when Shell or Exxon raises their prices, the smaller companies will raise them just enough to not force any buyers away. This is obviously all in a perfect world but small companies have to react to larger companies prices. They are still going to get x amount of people buying gas whether they sell it at 2.15 or 3.15 (depending on the other companies prices) so they will figure out the highest price they can sell it at
