I think that the tragedy of GF3 is the fact that it had the potential to be a great film, but missed its mark, due in part to storylines that drifted in bad directions, and some miscasting (obviously George and Sofia).

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the religious ceremony and party, and I don't think that there was anything wrong in bringing in Vincent, if only they had even mentioned Connie's boys and Sonny's other children. Why bring in Tom's son, and then act like the rest of the family doesn't exist?

I thought that Andy Garcia did a fine job with his role. I enjoyed Joe Mantegna as Zaza. I was happy to see Johnny and Al. Even the baker was still around. Nice consistency.
Even the Vatican thing was ok.

However, I think that the wagon fell off the wheels with the introduction of the incest storyline. Maybe a better actress could've carried it off, but I doubt it.

The frustrating thing about GF3 was that it had great moments, which gave us an inkling of what could have been. It's like seeing something shiny in the mud, just a flash and it's gone.

KC [/qb]
I still cannot understand how Apple can even give an opinion of a movie that she has NEVER ever sat through from begining to end! confused

Don Cardi cool [/QB]
I am reminded here of a famous George Bernard Shaw line. A young writer had sent Shaw an original manuscript, seeking the great critc's opinion of his work. Shaw scathingly panned the book and returned it to the young writer, who immediately advised Shaw that he could not possibly have read the whole book because the aspiring writer had purposely pasted two pages together, and they remained pasted when Shaw returned the book.
Shaw replied, "I don't have to eat a whole egg to know it's rotten!"

That said, I don't think GIII is a bad movie. It has its problems (George Hamilton is no Duvall...and the love affair between cousins is awkward...and it certainly can't stand with its predecessors), but I still watch it.

Hey there, klydon1...I believe you just gave me a new signature line.

And I wasn't even looking for one...!!

Thanks...and enjoy the movie.

I though it would be funny when the cardinal keeps saying to Mike "go on my son" if the Mike runs out of major things to say and starts confessing things like "I stole a pencil one time from the nuns at school; I left mass earky a few Sundays; i felt up Matyann at a party; etc. That eould make a funny Saturday Night Live sketch.

Catholic Confessions have always been fodder for some great humor. Seinfeld had an episode where he went to confession to complain to a priest. Being Jewish he wasn't sure what to do in the confessional, and ended up sitting down.

In the film "Lovers and Other Strangers" Bea Arthur (Maude), confesse to, I think, hollering at the butcher. lol lol lol

That's just the Catholic Church for you. I'm not going to go bashing Catholicism (as I have in the past, but I've done it with many religions), but it's the way it works. Sin, sin, sin, confess, repent. The problem is, many people don't repent and that's what makes them a good/bad Catholic.
The Catholic Church teaches us that if you truly have repented from your sins, your sins will be forgiven, as God forgives anyone if they have truly repented from their sins. What is so wrong with that? If someone is genuinely sorry for something that they have done wrong, why shouldn't they be forgiven?

Oh, TB, you have no idea how serious the nuns were about that!! And the whole thing where you had to kneel down so that they could check the length of your skirt! That one led to legions of Catholic school girls rolling up the waistbands of their skirts. lol

You are leaving out one important factor, and that is you have to confess your sins to God, through the priest in confession, who is taking the place of God, when you are confessiong. This is one of the 7 sacraments instituted by Christ to forgive sin. So just being sorry isnt enough, you have to tell the priest each and every one. frown

Come out Virginia, don't let me wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
aw But sooner or later it comes down to fate
I might as well be the one

well, They showed you a statue, told you to pray
They built you a temple and locked you away
But they never told you the price that you pay
For things that you might have done.....
Only the good die young
thats what i said
only the good die young x2

You might have heard I run with a dangerous crowd
We ain't too pretty we ain't too proud
We might be laughing a bit too loud
aw But that never hurt no one

So come on Virginia show me a sign
Send up a signal I'll throw you the line
The stained-glass curtain you're hiding behind
Never lets in the sun
Darlin' only the good die young
(woah x5 )
i tell ya
only the good die young x2

You got a nice white dress and a party on your confirmation
You got a brand new soul
mmmm, And a cross of gold
But Virginia they didn't give you quite enough information
You didn't count on me
When you were counting on your rosary
(oh woah woah)

They say there's a heaven for those who will wait
Some say it's better but I say it ain't
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
the Sinners are much more fun...

you know that only the good die young
oh woah baby
i tell ya
only the good die young, X2

You say your mother told you all that I could give you was a reputation
Aww She never cared for me
But did she ever say a prayer for me? oh woah woah

Come out come out come out virgina dont let me wait,
You catholic girls start much too late
Sooner or later it comes down to fate
I might as well be the one,
You know that only the good die young

I'm telling you baby
You know that only the good die young
Only the good die young
Only the gooooooooooooooood
Only the good die young
Only the gooooooooooooooood
Only the good die young
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooo oooooooooo...

Very true! Its very difficult being Catholic at times, with all the different rules. Why do you think they have 12 years of Religion classes? Theres so much to learn..... eek

My former secretary went through K-12 in Catholic schools. She told me that she once showed up in a skirt that was just above her knees. The teaching Sister called her out in front of the class and flipped her skirt over her head with a ruler. She was mortified. rolleyes

That must have happened AGES ago! eek I myself attended a Catholic University and then taught in a Catholic school for a couple of years (both taking place a great lot of time ago): I never had to dress myself like a nun. I dressed and had a facial make up like any 20/30 years old girl did then and nobody ever questioned. I think it's a matter of taste and a limit must be fixed, anyway. If girls and teachers wear gynecological miniskirts or pubic hair showing trousers, well they should be reproached, IMO.

Lavinia, I'm only in my 40's, so it wasn't all THAT long ago. The nuns would constantly check the hemlines of our skirts (skirts were notoriously short in the 60's and 70's), and, once in a while, we would have to kneel so that Sister could make sure our hemlines touched the floor. Also, we were very limited as to cosmetics.

And the best - Sister would pull you and your boyfriend apart with the famous "Make room for the Holy Ghost!" if they caught you dancing too closely at a school dance. lol

It is my understanding that starting with the mid 70's things sort of lighten up a little in Catholic School.

I was in Catholic school only from 4th grade thru 8th, and although I agree, the nuns were very strict, I don't every remember anyone getting reprimanded for their attire. However, we had uniforms rolleyes (which I hated), and that probably was part of the reason.

I have heard many times about the patent leather shoes, and nuns hitting your hand with a ruler/yardstick or something like that, but in my school anyway, I never saw or experienced anything like that. Maybe a high school was different than middle school in that respec though. ohwell

horrible, isn't it? If they do it nowadays, they would be sued, I guess.

Oh, we had uniforms, and the girls used to try and make the skirts shorter by rolling up the waistbands. Also, the nuns definitely hit with the ruler (mostly the older ones). Sister Mary Phillip would make you stick your hand out for a rap on the knuckles. And if you pulled your hand away, it became two raps, and so on. She was about 112 years old and maybe 4 ft. 10 in., but we were terrified of her.

Well, it was the Bronx. What can I say?

And forget about being sued. If you got hit in school, then you'd be in even BIGGER trouble at home because you made Sister mad.

Looking back, I think Catholic School, although I didn't like it, was much more difficult (academically) than public school. My grades were worse in Catholic school than public school. ohwell

My family belonged to an Italian parish where nearly everyone was Italian, including the Priest & nuns. All of them spoke broken English (I can't say for me that was a deterrent though, as many of my old time relatives spoke broken English as well.) The order of nuns, which I had only seen at my parish was "Consolata (?)", wearing grey habits. All the names were Italian like: Sisters, Sebastiana, Celestia, Gianna, and our Priest was Fr. Davanzo.

We use to have a yearly festival, where a huge crucifix was carried down the street several blocks, and of course, Italian food games, rides in the church parking lot. We'd call it "The Feast" and it was like a holiday. My grandmother lived just down the street from the church so we could keep running back for more money for the games/food. It was a lot of fun actually. tongue

Sorry for going on. This sparked the memory.

not at my home. My parents would have never stayed with that. Not even if I lit a fire in my classroom. Nobody had the right to touch me. Nobody but my parents, of course! grin

I don't want realism. I want magic! Yes, yes, magic. I try to give that to people. I do misrepresent things. I don't tell the truth. I tell what ought to be truth (Blanche/A streetcar named desire)

Sister MP sounds ALOT like our Sister Ann at St. Nicholas RC School in Palisades Park, NJ.

Same height, approx same age (at least to us 1st graders) and pretty much the same demeanor. Once, she put me over her knee, and whacked my little panty-clad butt with a ruler in front of the whole class. Of course...I don't recall what I did to deserve such 'special' treatment wink

I remember one of Sister Ann's famous sayings, which she'd utter with a sinister grin:

"You're so dumb, it's pathetic."

We kids used to smile along with her, figuring she was kidding around with us...which I'm sure she was.

But who knows...
