I don't think Immobiliare was a bank. It was a multi-billion dollar international conglomerate - real estate, I think, altho they never make this completely clear - in which the Vatican was the largest shareholder. Michael agreed to deposit several hundred million dollars in the Vatican Bank to cover missing funds - presumably embezzled - in exchange for the Vatican's approval of him as the controlling interest in Immobiliaire.

There's really nothing in the film that indicates that to be the case. We don't know what he did or what role he had in the family in the years between Mary's death and his own.
