Well, in another thread, there were some real intense comments about religion. In this one, I was afraid of starting a new religious outburst, so I said "as".

But, I do have to say that the Rainman portrayal comes in second and Sylvestor Stallone's portrayal in Rhinestone third.

Some performances which impress me:

Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver.
Gene Hackman in The Conversation.
Charles Laughton in Jamaica Inn.
Edmund Gwenn in The Skin Game.
Paddy Considine in Dead Man's Shoes.
Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet.
Kenneth Branagh in Hamlet.
Michael Gambon in The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover.
Woody Allen in Manhattan.
Sheryl Lee in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.
Liv Ullmann in Scenes From a Marriage.
Isabelle Huppert in The Piano Teacher.
Fernando Rey in That Obscure Object of Desire.
Scarlett Johansson in Lost In Translation.
Anna Karina in Bande a part.

The best performance I saw recently was Stephen Graham's in This Is England.

You know, I think Edward Norton was fucking excellent as the nameless protagonist in Fight Club. I'm surprised none of the "younger" members mentioned it, considering it's cult popularity among generations X and Y

You're not six feet tall, so you don't look like a Polish Jew circa 1943.
