It seems to be that it is considered a lack of respect for the host to drink or to get drunk inside his house, of there that the drinks always take in the garden. It comes from Roman Culture, where get drunk in front of the host was an insult.

He admitted it, and Michael noticed he was an old man with too much wine.

But lets get back to the funny stuff. This one is not original, but the "Champagne Cocktails" line always amused me.
