Amateur films have been around practically since film itself. There are plenty of Godfather-inspired films to be found on the Internet. Tributes, spoofs, you name it. Lots of links have been posted right here on these Boards.
I made (or was involved with) lots of these in my younger days. I made my first one at age ten. I produced and directed my last 8 millimeter magnum opus (a spoof of
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?) in 1975. Eleven years later, a NYC science-fiction club I was a part of made an amateur film/video to show to children in hospitals and long-term care facilities. I directed that one - and that's also where I met my late wife.
I am quite serious when I say that there are many talented film makers out there who were bitten by the creative bug as younger amateurs.
