Vito was apolitical. He saw politicians as people he could bribe to get things done. Look at his views on Michael going to war for his country....he thought it was a waste of time to fight for "strangers."

He also had no interest in sports. He cared about his family, his business, and his tomato garden in that order

As dt said, Vito probably was apolitical, since politics was a means to an end--power. But he almost certainly would have favored Democratic politicians and judges, since they had an armlock on New York City (especially Manhattan) in those days. As for statewide or nationwide politicians--Vito would have favored whomever gave him the best deal for his bribes.

Most of the Dodger fans were in Brooklyn--unless you mean the Dodgers' bocce team.

He certainly backed Dems in NY and the other industrial (union dominated) states, but he probably also backed Reps he could get to. He was not interested in political prties, but how he could manipulate politicians without making it look like he was doing the manipulation as in "Don't give this to one of our paisan...give it to a Jew congressman from another district."

I don't think anyone who grew up in Sicily fighting the pezzonovante at any point in Sicily's history, would be big subscribers to either of the 2 parties.

(Especially considering the fact there are only TWO parties to choose from. )

Plus, Dems have always been known to be into da 'whores' and that was not Vito's business.

Vito, Sonny, Hagen, Sollozo, Barzini, McCluskey, Bonasera, Tessio, Clemenza, Brasi, Greene, Pentangeli, Roth, Ola...all were registered to the Democratic Party, the Party of Compassion.

Michael registered Republican once he made the move to Nevada.

Carlo never registered in his life. For Fredo it didn't matter - Republican/Democratic/Independent - he just enjoyed a good party.

The question is Geary? Nevada's senators in the 50's were primarily Republican.

One thing for sure....Frankie Five Angels hated the Dodgers cause "they recruit spiks, they recruit niggas" and they abandon their own neighborhood.

I don't know about that Klydon. I think that Fredo was actually a Liberal. After all he did display that Liberal trait in his little tirade with Michael ...." I'm smaht, I can do things."

Puzo created Vito to have a great character. He was wise in many ways. Vito was much too wise to hold a certain political view. Like an honest American, he voted, but never for a certain platform. I think he would have voted for the best man for the job.

He could have been republican do to his close ties with business.

Or a democrat due to his humanitarianism.

Don Vito Corleone was a huge fan of the New York Yankees

No DC, you got it all wrong... he was a conservative republican.
Proof was when he told Michael "I dunno... I was kept pretty much in the dark."

Actually we're both wrong. He really was a democrat. He was banging White House interns, two at a time.

Those were no interns; they were young Senate pages (back to the Republican side?)
Although he was passed over for an appointment he wanted, but didn't earn (back to the Democrats?)

No question that Sonny was a Republican. Pushed around a photographer, destroyed his property and then paid for it to be fixed up. Plus his answer to every problem was to go to war.

German Irish -

I see absolutely no reason to close this topic. So far everyone here has posted in fun and humor and no one has taken anything that's been posted seriously, has gotten offended by what has been posted or has started an all out war. Everything has been said in jest. The posters here are just having fun with this and with each other.

Now as far as anyone making any personal references to other members, YOU have been the only one to do so at this point, and your reference to DonT was totally uncalled for.

I think that although many of us may have different opinions and have different philosophies when it comes to debating politics over in the GENERAL DISCUSSION thread, those differences of political opinion have not, and should not, carry over to this topic.

So if you would like to participate in this topic and are willing to have fun and not take offense to what's being said here, then do so with the intent of having fun with this and without making any personal references to those who post here.

If you do not wish to participate, and you do not have the self control to refrain from turning this into a political debate or an attack on another member, then please ignore the posts and move on to another topic that may interest you.

The intent here is to have fun at the expense of the GF characters by comparing them to the political parties. It is being done in fun.

Well before we go to the mattresses might I say how brilliant Puzo's writing is in the paragraph describing Vito's garden? It's right before his death scene and one of the finer pieces of writing I have ever come across. He sums up Vito's life's philosophy by describing the garden he planted. GENIUSGENIUSGENIUS

Geary could have been modeled after Pat McCarran who was a Democrat.

With Geary in Fredo's Brothel
Ok, what about Woltz? Could go either way. He was probably Jewish and from Newe York, and he is a Hollywood big shot, all of which would make us think he would be a democrat, but this was the 1940's and I think the movie moguls of that era were republicans. Also he had aspirations to being like royalty he tells Tom that the decor of his mansion used to be part of a king's palace, and then he had that race horse...quite a tax write off, so maybe he was a republican.

But then again there was that young girl

"Io sono stanco, sono imbigliato, and I wan't everyone here to know, there ain't gonna be no trouble from me..Don Corleone..Cicc' a port!"

"I stood in the courtroom like a fool."

"I am Constanza: Lord of the idiots."

Vito was definitely in the Green Party.

Mugsy: Oh, okay, boss.
