Joolsie, I tend to agree with you. Dramatic effect was probably the highest on FFC's mind. If you see the entire part 2, you will find MANY such instances - pentangeli's suicide following the conversation about roman empire, Kay's aborting the child, Fredo betraying his brother etc.
